Brett Kelly: Director

1. Tell us a little about your background, where are you from and when did you decide that you wanted to become a filmmaker?

I'm from Ottawa, Canada. I've been an actor for over a decade now. At the time i was starting out there weren't very many acting projects in town so i studied Television Broadcasting at college and Theatre at University. Finally I just decided to make my own movies as a chance to showcase my acting. I never intented to be doing it for this long, but the directing bug bit me and now I love it.

2. Who inspired you to become a filmmaker?

My father was a creative type. He was always a big inspiration to me- his passing inspired the making of "The Feral Man"

3. Tell us about your first feature "The Feral Man".

The Feral Man is a physcological story of a man who believes he is becoming a monster. I'm still pretty happy with how it turned out. As a first feature, there are obviously things i wish i did differently- but it represents a time capsule of a fun filmmaking experience.

4. You just recently finished "The Bonesetter Returns" what was your experience like writing and directing the film?

"The Bonesetter Returns" was interesting because it is a sequel to "The Bonesetter"- directing a sequel is flexing a different set of muscles than a regular movie. As a director you have to try to tell a new story without losing the folks who may not have seen the first one. I think the effects are great and the movie is pretty cool. Also i got to work with Debbie Rochon who is a great actress and a fun person.

5. Along with being a director, your also an actor. Tell us about some of your latest projects.

Yup- I acted in a movie called "The Walkers" which will appear on a compilation called "Goregoyles:Back to the Flesh" and I also acted in Chris Seaver's movie "Destruction Kings" which is coming out this summer. There are a few more things on the horizon as well- its great to get to give a performance and not have to worry about the directing aspect.

6. From your experience, what do you think is the most important thing for a Director to bring to a set?

Donuts! No- just kidding. A passion for the project is a must along with experience. A director must know what he is talking about at all times on set- or at least seem like it (laughter).

7. Any future projects in the works? Give us the scoop!

I'm premiering my newest movie "My Dead Girlfriend" at the Pittsburgh Comicon in April. That movie is a hilarious, romantic zombie movie. Its not like any of the other zombie movies out there right now- i describe it as "Fawlty Towers meets George Romero".

I'm also in pre-production on "Kingdom of the Vampire" a remake of the 1991 JR Bookwalter movie. I'm very excited about this one!

8. What is the biggest problem with Hollywood today?

The cost of ticket prices. While I'm sure downloading is definitely hurting the studios- if they made the ticket prices more manageable- I know i would go to the theatre more often.

9. Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Hopefully making more movies that people enjoy and making movies with actual budgets would be nice. (laughter)

10. Do you have any advice to aspiring filmmakers?

Don't be one of the million guys out there who try to make a feature that you want to unleash to the public the first time out. Make a lot of short films, make your mistakes privately, learn your craft- and when you are ready- release a movie that will blow me away!

11. When all is said and done, what 3 things would you like for people to remember about you?

I want to be remembered as a good person, a good entertainer and a good husband and father (someday)

12. Here's where we give you a word or phrase and you give us the first thoughts that pop into your mind.

Hollywood: I want to visit

Toxic Shock TV: Supporting the arts!

Favorite Genre: film-noir

Biggest Regrets: taking a student loan

Biggest Prick: computer virus writers

Breakthru Moment: So far i guess it would be meeting JR Bookwalter at the Dark Xmas convention- the guy has had a lot of faith in me.

The funniest thing that has ever happened to you on a set: On the set of "the Walkers" i was dressed in a "Moss Man" costume in the middle of the woods when the crew started scrambling suddenly to dismantle the equipment. It turned out that the forest rangers were coming and we didn't have permission to shoot there. We all had to hide and there I was dressed head to toe in moss. All i did was turn around and blend into the trees. Funny stuff. Afterwards the director's Mom had to put calomine lotion on my back (laughter)
Your biggest "break-thru" moment:

You can only watch three movies for the rest of your life, which three: "Double Indemnity", "Evil Dead 2" and "My Dead Girlfriend" (couldn't think of anything else)

You can only listen to three ALBUMS for the rest of your life, which three: Kiss -Alive, Black N Blue-The Ultimate Collection and Sweet FA- Stick to your Guns. I'm a rocker at heart!

Thanks for the interview!
