Debbie Rochon: Actress

1. Please tell us a bit about your background. Where are you from and what inspired you to become an actress?

I am originally from Vancouver Canada. After working on LADIES AND GENTLEMEN: THE FABULOUS STAINS! For 3 months I realized I had to be an actress for the rest of my life. It gave me hope and something to aspire to during a time of serious trials and life crisis.

2. Who is your biggest influence as an actress?

That’s a great question but a tough one to answer. Most of my heroes in the acting department have been men. Probably because post Hayes Code enforcement all the great roles have been for men mostly. So I would have to say the characterizations of Johnny Depp, Sean Penn and certainly now Philip Seymour Hoffman come to mind.

3. Tell us about your latest films “Mulberry Street”, “Hoodoo For Voodoo” and “Rapturious”.

In MULBERRY STREET I play a news anchor that is following the story of the disease that is spreading like wildfire turning people into rat-zombies throughout NYC. HOODOO FOR VOODOO I play the ticket master who warns the people of the evil they are about to experience if they dare enter the side show. In RAPTURIOUS I play the manager to an up and coming rap star who is losing his mind. Or is he fighting off the devil for a deal he made in his last life? It’s a great film and it’s pretty much what would happen if you mixed 8 MILE with ROSEMARY’S BABY.

4. Tell us about your upcoming feature “Demons 5” directed by Jeff Burr. How are you preparing for your roll as Jennifer Crampton.

Well that film is in pre-production right now with no dates set. Until the funding is complete I don’t really invest in working on a character. Too many times it becomes delayed for great lengths of time so it’s not a wise move.

5. Of all the films and television that you've done, what would you consider your most memorable roles?

I would say the film that was the hardest for me and I got the most out of to date has to be NOWHERE MAN. I think the role most people find memorable, however, is my character Jane Toppan in AMERICAN NIGHTMARE.

6. How did you prepare for that role?

I did a lot of prep work by studying people with certain mental disorders and what they do to deal with them. Or in her case make the voices in her head go away. The role was completely internal so I worked for months before hand and in order to keep that work alive I pretty much didn’t associate with anyone on the set during filming. It was the only way to keep concentrated.

7. What aspects of that character do you identify with?

I always identify with any character that is a loner. I have always been one and I love playing them the most. I love the outsider, the geek, the forgotten.

8. From an actor’s standpoint what is the most important thing a Director can bring to the set?

Preparedness! A director who has everything mapped out in his head without suffocating the actors. A director who knows what he or she wants and has thought everything through a thousand times before hand.

9. Any future projects in the works? Give us the scoop!

OK! Here it is! I am working on a disk for Troma which will feature all the highlights of my work with them from the past almost 15 years! Including new material like an episode of TRAILER PARK the series I starred in for Fangoria Entertainment. I just finished producing a behind the scenes featurette for Fangoria Entertainment on James Gunn’s new flick SLiTHER which turned out really great. I will reprise my role as a crazy gym teacher in BIKINI BLOOD BATH 2! APOCALYPSE AND THE BEAUTY QUEEN should be out later this year, it also stars Gunnar Hansen. I just finished working on the films ZEPPO and DARK SIDE OF THE LIGHT as well as the short MEAT MARKET. I have some really cool projects coming up soon that I’m excited about which I can’t announce just yet. I am writing for Sirens of Cinema magazine, GoreZone magazine in the UK and Horror Maniacs magazine in Italy. As well as the convention and film festival appearances.

10. What do you think makes a scary movie scary?

MOOD. SUSPENCE. BELIEVABLE STORYLINE! Setting rules then following them. The ability to believe the actors in the scene. The script is extremely important! Usually things that could be true in real life I find to be most scary!

11. Do you have any advice for aspiring actors?

Study. Work on lots of student films and shorts. Doing will always be the best experience. Don’t be too big to take extra work at first and see how a professional set is run.

12. When all is said and done, what 3 things would you like for people to remember about you?

Debbie Rochon was a great actress. Debbie Rochon was a great person. Debbie Rochon helped a countless number of people along her journey.

13. Here's where we give you a word or phrase and you give us the first thoughts that pop into your mind.

Lloyd Kaufman: ROAD TRIP!

Toxic Shock TV: THE BEST!

Worst Fear: Film will die off completely and we will only ever see movies made on digital video.

Biggest regret: Didn’t have more confidence as a child.

Scream Queen: Overrated.

Biggest prick: WOW Too many come to mind! Right now, an ex-magazine editor.

The funniest thing that has ever happened to you on a set: In 1985 I was working on a student film and I was supposed to walk gracefully past this backdrop but I slipped and brought the whole backdrop down with me.

Your biggest "break-thru" moment: After filming ABDUCTED II: THE REUNION, I realized I can and love working as a lead in a film. With all the responsibility on my shoulders to carry the movie!

You can only watch three movies for the rest of your life, which three: THE ROAD WARRIOR, SUNSET BOULEVARD, TAXI DRIVER, THE SHINING, FIGHT CLUB, THE WARRIORS (help, I can’t choose just three!).

You can only listen to three albums for the rest of your life, which three: Any Prince album, William Shatner’s The Transformed Man and Funked Up - The Very Best of Parliament.
