Lloyd Kaufman:

Director, Producer, Writer, and Pres. Troma Films, Inc.

[CS]  This is Chris Staviski and Brian Corder with Toxic Shock TV, today we are with the one the only and quite possibly the greatest independent film distributor, producer and director of all time Mr. Lloyd Kaufman of Troma.

[LK]  Well thank you, greetings from Tromaville and we're here at the International Science Fiction and Horror Film Festival and I have with me the magnificent Super Tromettes, Anorexia…

[ANOREXIA]  Hello

[LK]  And Bulimia

[BULIMIA] Hi

[LK]  And as if that wasn’t enough, guess who else is here, Mr. Troma Icon himself the Toxic Avenger.

[TOXIE]  Argh Ugh Ugh

[LK]  Toxie is saying something about Toxic Shock TV, I think.

[TOXIE]  Argh Ugh Ugh Argh

[LK]  Toxie says that when he is not making those great movies like The Toxic Avenger, Class of Nukem High, Tromeo and Juliet and Teenage Catgirls in Heat and Surf Nazis Must Die, Blood Sucking Freaks and Terror Firmer. Toxie likes to kick back and Toxie likes to listen to Toxic Shock TV, because that’s the best TV on the Internet that there could possibly be.  Dot Com.

[CS]  One of the questions I kind of wondered about you is, What stirred you on to the genre that you are so awesome at?  The Toxic Avenger, etc. Why didn’t you go more of a main stream lovey dovey. Instead you got right in their face with some good, kick butt action horror?

[LK]  Well, ya know, when your in prison.  Being violated by a 300lb Philipino boy, it puts you in a slightly different place, and uhm, I had to spend all of my cigarette money on Rufus. So, it gave me that Vegas-in-space alternative lifestyle, Toxic Avenger, Class of Nukem High area.  I think art must come from the heart.  Art must come… To thy own self be true, a phrase coined by William Shakespeare, as you know wrote that amazing, best selling book “A Hundred and One Money Making Screen Play Ideas” and I think, if your going to make movies, you should do what you believe in.  The movies that we’ve been making for the last 30 some odd years are films that the Troma team truly believes.  Not just the Troma team, but you know there’s a website called Devony…Devony.  Devony.com, you get a lot of good information about independent film and I think its just very important to be an auteur filmmaker, a cinematic fransais and a caid de Cinéma, when I was at Yale University, I was introduced to the caid de cinema, which was written by Truffaut and Chebral and all of those guys and their theory of the auteur film director.  That the film director is the author of the work, that movies aren’t made by committees or by giant, devil worshiping, international media conglomerates, but by individuals and I think that’s what motivates muah.

[CS]  Here’s a question that’s going to lead in from what you’re talking about, Direction. What do you think is the most important thing for a director to bring to a film?

[LK]  Uhm… I’ll have to consult with Anorexia and Bolemia.  What do you think is the most important thing a director should bring to a film?

[ANOREXIA] … … … Direction

[LK]  Anorexia says that I have an erection.  She is absolutely right, these are the most beautiful Tromettes, I have ever seen.  But I don’t think that has too much to do with the question, but… Oh, Direction?!  Ahh, good answer… very good answer. Bolemia, What do you think is the most important thing a director should bring to a film.

[BOLEMIA]  Their point of views.

[LK]  Bolemia says point of view, and I think that is a very, very profound statement, because the greatest directors, the directors whose bodies of work endure, like Hitchcock and uhm, you know… Kurosawa and all of these great directors, its their point of view, their soul.

[BC]  Vision…

[LK] And their vision. There you go, their vision.

[LK]  Now Toxie, Tell us about directing.  What is your advice to young directors?  What can you say to young directors today, from the halls of Tromaville.

[TOXIE]  Ugh Argh Ugh Ugh Ugh

[LK]  Toxie is saying that Lloyd Kaufman is the most sensitive, he is the most delightful film director he has worked with, he is so happy that Lloyd Kaufman is making movies after more than thirty years.

[CS]  I know that you mentioned the big Satan worshiping media conglomerates that are out there doing the BS that you see.

[LK]  Satan’s cool, we like Satan.  It’s the Devil we don’t like.

[CS]  Oh…the Devil, I’m sorry.  What do you think is the biggest problem with Hollywood these days?

[LK] Well, I was just having a chat with Bolemia , Super Tromette. She was saying that she finds that all of these remakes. That she feels that Hollywood is devoid of any originality. So as a result they are remaking movies, like The Fog. The Fog is a perfect example. The original fog was a pretty decent movie and if you listen to the commentary. John Carpenters commentary on the DVD of the original fog, he talks about.  “When we made this movie, we had very little money. All we could do is have fog machines, and wind to create the fog. ” Now on the remake, which came out this year, they had a Kabillion dollars to make that movie. The movie sucked because it had no originality, they had all of the technical expertise in the world and they blew it. I think that’s the problem with Hollywood today. It isn’t Hollywood exactly, Sony Pictures, they aren’t Hollywood they are Japanese owned. Vivendi, General Electric, NBC whatever. They are TV, that’s not even American. Its nothing, its Television. Jet Planes. Australia owns Twentieth Century Fox it’s an Austrialian.  Rupert Murdoch . So these are international media conglomerates and the problem is that they have no interest in doing anything original, or they don’t want to change the status quo. They aren’t interested in the revolution, they are only interested in preserving their elitists pecking order that they have created for themselves. So they can have hundreds of men in suites making four hundred thousand dollars a year for doing nothing and then hundreds more of them earning millions of dollars a year doing little to nothing and then two or three at the top who earn a Kabillian a year, who work very hard to keep the status quo and brain wash the rest of us. That’s the problem and thank the good lord for Toxic Shock TV, because I tell you, without Toxic Shock TV, The Troma Team would be out there all alone.

[CS]  Now where going to throw a couple of words at you and I just want to hear the first thing that pops into your head. P…

[LK]  Penis… …I will not answer about Penis. I think that’s a very bad question. No more bad words.

[CS] Well I was thinking…

[LK] Fuck… … Now look, I’m not going to talk about fuck. Please, I’ll give you one more chance to say a word that is not filthy.

[CS] Okay, who is the biggest prick out there? In general.

[LK] I couldn’t tell you. I think Hilary Clinton could be one of the modern day monsters. If I were going to do a science fiction movie, I’d probably start with her.

[CS] I agree with you on that one.

[BC] What’s your biggest break-thru moment?

[LK] Biggest break-thru moment, uh. Toxie, what was our biggest break-thru moment?

[TOXIE] Ugh Argh Argh Argh Ugh Argh

[LK] Toxie is reminding me of the time when the Toxic Avenger was almost made into a big budget remake, about 20 years ago and we pretty much had broken thru the hymen of the establishment. The only problem is that we were the ones who got fucked and uhm that was one of the biggest break-thru moments and also a very unpleasant moment. We had to sue a company called New Line, who were owned by Time-Warner. That was sort of the last time we had any interest. I don’t know about break-thrus. Were just interested in making movies and we don’t want to disappoint our fans, but we also don’t want to conform to any preconceived formulas, so I don’t know. What would be our biggest breakthrough moment? What do you suggest Anorexia?

[ANOREXIA] I think tonight is going to be a big breakthrough moment for you, you’r going to be inducted into the International Sci-Fi and Horror Hall of Fame. Congratulations.

[LK] Anorexia brings up a good point, that’s right. The fact that I, Lloyd Kaufman, Troma Entertainment is being inducted into the International Sci-Fi and Horror hall of fame, that’s a heck of a break-thru, yeah thank you. Thank you very much, I’m very grateful for that. That’s a breakthrough all right, your right. It means that I’m a has-been.

[CS] Toxic Avenger was turned into a cartoon for a while. Now, did you get screwed over on that, or were you controlling the complete rights to that?

[LK] The Toxic Avenger is the only movie in the history of cinema where a young boy’s head is squished by the wheel of an automobile, and was subsequently made into a delightful, children’s, Saturday morning environmentally correct cartoon show, so we are very proud of that, but I did write some of the scripts and we signed off on all of the cartoons, they were really good. The problem was that the whole franchise, all of the toys and action figures and lunch boxes all of that was dependant upon the big budget remake and that never got made, so everything fell apart. New Line had their fingers crossed when they signed the contract and that’s why we had to sue them and that pretty much destroyed the Toxic Avenger for a while and I think it was all for the best, because the remake would have sucked, so its just as well. Just as well, all works out for the best. I am living in a refrigerator box, but what the heck, what the hay! I wanted what’s his name, Adam Sandler, he’s the perfect Toxic Avenger. Did you see the longest yard with Adam Sandler? How crappy was that? Wasn’t that offal, and the original Longest Yard, when one football player kills the other one and they laugh about it, but in the Adam Sandler version, they didn’t have the guts to actually bring the darkness in. Very cool.

[CS] They kept saying “I think I broke his fucking neck”

[LK] Yeah, Yeah

[CS] They said it about seven times.

[LK] And they were laughing about it, they thought it was really great!

[CS] Exactly, and in this one they say, “I think I made him shit his pants”

[LK] Yeah, yeah.

[CS] Come on, everybody shits their pants, after a couple of beers and tequila shots. It’s just a natural occurrence.

[LK] I think I’m going to do it tonight when I’m inducted into the hall of fame.

[LK] Anyway, thanks to Toxic Shock TV. Bolemia, why don’t you sign off?

[BOLEMIA] Oh, oh… Thank you for coming, I think, yeah… yeah… It was a pleasure to have an interview with you guys.

[LK] Perfect, perfect. Thank you Bolemia and how did Bolemia know I was Cumming, that’s the only think that I cannot imagine. I guess some people shit their pants. Oh… ohh that stain, no wonder! Anyway, thank you Toxic Shock. Cheers.

[CS] Thank you Lloyd Kaufman, this is Chris Staviski and Brian Corder with Toxic Shock TV
