Kenny Hotz and Spencer “Spenny” Rice, life-long friends who live in Toronto, Canada, go head-to-head in mindless-yet-genius competitions that make up their half-hour-long reality show. The loser of the challenge then has to carry out a humiliation deed chosen at random by the winner. Creating the show themselves, Kenny and Spenny claim the show is totally unscripted and entirely real.

To be entirely honest, whenever I saw the promotional spots for this show on Comedy Central, I thought to myself, “Look! It’s ‘Jackass’ with older guys.” However, when I actually watched it, I was pleasantly surprised. Sure, if you aren’t a fan of toilet humor and general stupidity, this isn’t for you, but this show takes annoying frat boy humor and makes it funny again.

Kenny is essentially the love child of John Belushi and Jack Black. To step up his game and set himself apart from other comedians, however, he’s actually pretty brilliant. He wins a lot of the show’s challenges mostly by outwitting Spenny. He bends the rules without purposefully breaking them and concocts genius schemes to make sure he reigns victorious.

Kenny Farts Fire

Spenny, who looks like a mix between John Cusack and Dana Carvey, is often referred to as being feminine, having high moral standards and being Kenny’s opposite which makes for a great dynamic on the show.

Of all the episodes featured on the first volume, two stuck out for me. First was “Who Can Be Tied to a Goat the Longest?” By far the best part is seeing how Spenny’s chosen goat reacts when Kenny feeds it espresso and red bull. Sounds funny, right? Well, it is. The second best episode in my book is “Who Can Blow the Biggest Fart?” Toilet humor, yes, but it’s hilarious, indeed.

Overall, this show impressed me. It’s funny, immature and brilliant all rolled into one show. In fact, I liked this DVD so much that I’m definitely looking forward to next season. My heart is officially in the shape of a Canadian maple leaf.
