Valhalla Motion Pictures, Top Cow, and Platinum Studios teamed up last summer to brainstorm on what’s been announced as a big-screen adaptation of the Top Cow comic character “Magdalena”, which will star Jenna Dewan as the titular heroine, and Luke Goss as Kristof, her mentor. Producer Gale Anne Hurd, who is spearheading the project, recently talked to Superherohype.com about the spear-wielding warrior chick for good.

Hurd, who has worked on the likes of this past summer’s blockbuster “The Incredible Hulk” and the more recent “Punisher: War Zone”, in theaters this Friday, recently told Superherohype.com “[The Magdalena’s] terrific. It’s kind of like ‘The Da Vinci Code’ meets ‘Wanted,’ […] You’ve got the mythology and a character who isn’t initially aware of her legacy which something I love. Many of my films deal with that. And it’s still has supernatural elements.”

On her stars, Hurd says that “Luke is going to be great for the role and Jenna has steeped herself in this the same way that Ray [Stevenson] has with Frank Castle [in the upcoming ‘Punisher: War Zone’].”

The Magdalena is a warrior descended from the daughters of Mary Magdalene, serving as a warrior for the Catholic Church. Serving the Inquisition and a mysterious cabal of Cardinals, she takes her orders to defend the church and Christianity against the forces of darkness. With one Magdalena a generation, she wields the Spear Of Destiny, which pierced the side of the crucified Jesus, and has various powers to fight sinners and demons, including the ability to show a person their inner heart and help them redeem. She first appeared in the pages of Top Cow’s “The Darkness” #15 in 1998, and has guest-starred in multiple Top Cow titles such as “The Darkness”, “Tomb Raider”, and “Witchblade”, and even appeared in a crossover with Marvel Comics’ “Daredevil”, as well as having two of her own limited series titles.

While there is no director attached to the project so far, Hurd is predicting a tentative 2010 release.
