CNN is reporting that O.J. Simpson has been sentenced today in Nevada to at least 15 years in prison for his role in a confrontation in a Las Vegas hotel in 2007. In a statement to the judge before his sentence was read, Simpson said he did not know he was doing anything illegal and did not mean to hurt anyone, saying “I didn’t mean to steal anything from anybody.”

On September 13 2007, Simpson led a group of men to a room in the Palace Station hotel in Las Vegas and left with various sports memorabilia and a phone. Bruce Fromong, a former sports memorabilia dealer and the first witness at the preliminary hearing, said that the group of men broke into his room and stole Simpson memorabilia at gunpoint. Then on September 16 2007, Simpson was arrested for his involvement in the robbery and held without bail. He denied breaking into the hotel room and stealing the items, claiming that they had been initially stolen from him. Simpson also denied the allegation that he or the people with him were armed in any way.

Simpson is infamous for his trail and subsequent acquittal in 1994 in the murders of his ex-wife Nichole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman. Simpson’s legal team, led by lawyer Johnnie Cochran, alleged reasonable doubt regarding the DNA evidence in the case as well as regarding police procedures and general mishandling of the investigation to call for his innocence.

Prior to that, Simpson was a well-known former football player, the first NFL player to rush more than 2,000 yards in a single season, a record he set in 1973 while playing for the Buffalo Bills.

Simpson faced a sentence between 6 years and life in prison over the incident.
