Summit Entertainment who brought us the hit film “Twilight” has acquired the rights to the 2006 Harry Houdini biography “The Secret Life of Houdini: The Making of America’s First Superhero,” written by William Kalush and Larry Sloman about the famous magician and escape artist. The controversial book insinuates that Harry Houdini acted as a spy for Britain and was asked to be an adviser to Czar Nicholas II’s court in pre-revolution Russia. The book also implies that Houdini’s death is connected to payback from the then-popular spiritualist movement, as Houdini was also known as a debunker of con artists who pretended to be spiritualists and mediums. According to Variety, Marvel is gathering a group of writers who will help Marvel come up with creative ways to launch its lesser-known properties, such as Black Panther, Cable, Doctor Strange, Iron Fist, Nighthawk and Vision. The writers, who will not include high-profile Marvel writers like Justin Theroux, Mark Protosevich and Zak Penn, will receive a salary for the year on the terms that Marvel owns whatever the writers work on during that period. Disney, who has had a scribe team since the 1990s, pays their writers up to $50,000. An anonymous source to /film has leaked that Cartoon Network has picked up the comic book “Firebreather”, for either an animated/CGI TV movie or an ongoing series. The source connects Peter Chung (Aeon Flux, Reign: The Conqueror) to the “Firebreather” adaptation in the director’s role. “Firebreather” is an Image Comics title created by Phil Hester and Andy Kuhn focusing on the life of a teenage half-dragon, whose mother is human but whose father is the King Of Monsters who’d want nothing more than his son to inherit his title. Variety reports that MGM and the Farrelly brothers are closing in on their cast for The Three Stooges. Sean Penn is set to play Larry, Jim Carrey is in negotiations to play Curly and the studio is zeroing in on Benicio Del Toro to play Moe.
