The Coen Brothers to Remake True Grit

Variety reports that the Coen brothers are set to remake True Grit, the classic Western film that won John Wayne an Oscar. Based on a Charles Portis novel, True Grit is about a 14-year-old girl who, along with an aging U.S. Marshal and another lawman, tracks her father’s killer in hostile Indian territory. While the original film was a showcase for Wayne and co-starred Kim Darby, Glen Campbell, Jeff Corey, Robert Duvall and Dennis Hopper, the Coens’ version will stick to Portis’ novel closer and tell the tale from the girl’s point-of-view. It seems as if the Evil Dead duo, Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell are having a bit of disagreement as to the future of a fourth installment of the series. Bruce Campbell recently sat down with A/V Club and said, “I think there should be an end to everything. I mean, did anyone really want Indiana Jones 4? The answer is no. I’ve taken a poll in about seven theaters now. Of 300 people, three hands go up. Jesse Wigutow has been hired to pen the screenplay for a biographical treatment of screen legend Steve McQueen for producers Michael Cerenzie and Christine Peters, The Hollywood Reporter is reporting. Wigutow’s script will be drawing from Marshall Terrill’s biography “Steve McQueen: Portrait of an American Rebel,” which the film rights to were bought back in January by Cerenzie (“Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead”) and Peters (“How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days”). Cerenzie-Peters Productions will produce with the film for Paramount, alongside Arthaus Pictures’ Brian Oliver and Chuck Rock. The Hollywood Reporter has a story up that the Sci-Fi Channel, soon to be known as SyFy, is tackling on creating a new miniseries adaptation of the comic-book hero “The Phantom”. So far no casting or any other information has been released so far. “The Phantom” is a comic strip created by Lee Falk and debuted in 1936. Adapted into various media, including a live-action movie in 1996 starring Billy Zane, it stars a costumed crimefighter named Kit Walker, operating from the African jungle.
