Variety.com is reporting that renowned actor Anthony Hopkins has been cast as Odin, the All-Father Norse god, in “Thor” from Marvel Studios.

Directed by Kenneth Branagh, production is starting on the adaptation of the Marvel Comics book about the Norse god of thunder this January. The film also stars Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston as Thor and Loki, respectively, with Natalie Portman playing Thor’s love interest Jane Foster.

Exiled to Earth to learn humility, the Norse god of thunder Thor takes on the alter ego of the crippled medical student Donald Blake, and learns humility and compassion. At the same time he must battle a growing threat that threatens not only his home of Asgard, but also Earth.

“Thor” is set for release May 20th, 2011 from Marvel and Paramount.
