Singer Madonna is slated to hop into the director’s chair to helm “W.E.”, a biopic about the affair between Britain’s King Edward VIII and divorced American Wallis Simpson, which led to the British royal abdicating to marry her.

Vera Farmiga (“Up in the Air”) is in talks to play Simpson, though no one has been announced for the role of Edward VIII. Edward’s desire to marry Simpson, who was not only twice-divorced but both her ex-husbands were also still alive, caused a minor constitutional crisis in the UK in the 1930’s. Edward was forced to abdicate to be able to marry Simpson, and was named Duke of Windsor by his brother George VI, who took his place on the throne. Wallis was named Duchess of Windsor, though without the style “Her Royal Highness.”

Madonna is writing the script with Alex Keshishian (“Truth or Dare”). Colin Vaines and David Parfitt are producing the project.
