Ever since Avatar smashed every box office record in history, it’s been understood that a sequel will follow. But beyond that, nobody really knows anything about Avatar 2 at all, even the first film’s producer, Jon Landau. While talking to ComingSoon at a sneak peek of Avatar on Blu-ray, Landau revealed that he’s feeling some sequel stress.

“Look, I think one of the things that we have been successful at is that the most pressure we feel is our own pressure,” he said. “We’ve always said that if the public wanted a sequel that we would do a sequel.” He added, “We’re only going to do it when we have a piece of material, a script, that we believe will be at least as entertaining and unique as the first movie was.”

Odds are, James Cameron has something brewing up there. At least he doesn’t have the pressure of having to come up with a super original concept. The sole gripe critics had about the Avatar was the plot’s lack of novelty, but the public didn’t seem to have a problem with it. And, of course, the possibilities for Avatar 2 are really endless. We can hang out on Pandora for a little longer or go with rumors and venture off to a new planet.

Regardless of where the story goes, there’s one thing that’ll remain relatively the same, the technology, and that means a much less demanding endeavor for the filmmakers the second time around. Landau explained, “Not only that, but the hard part is out of the way. We figured out how to do it, and our goal in the next one is to do it more cost-effectively and more time-efficiently.” Good thing because if Avatar 2 takes another 15 years, moviegoers will be suffering from some serious Na’vi withdrawal. If they’re saying there’s a chance they’ll make it, it better happen. We don’t want to get caught up in the rumor mill for years only to emerge empty handed.
