Jack Nicholson and Val Kilmer were just some of the many friends and family members who memorialized Dennis Hopper at a mass in Ranchos De Taos, New Mexico, on June 2, the Associated Press (AP) is reporting. The mass was held in a chapel, where the two-time Academy Award-nominated actor’s wood coffin was brought.
During the ceremony, Hopper’s son, Henry Lee, read the collection of poems ‘Leaves of Grass’ by Walt Whitman. Other relatives also spoke during the mass, after which the actor’s coffin was taken to a private burial in a funeral procession that included about a half a dozen motorcycles.
Nicholson described his ‘Easy Rider’ co-star as “an all-around guy. It was a very singular relationship I had with him, like nobody else. We were soul mates in a way.” Kilmer added that he last spoke to Hopper on a plane, and said that he always made him laugh.
