In my dream world, films would need at least a 60% on the Tomatometer to permit the making of a sequel, but sadly, critical reception holds no bearing upon the green light of subsequent films, only the box office does. As reported by the Los Angeles Times (via ComingSoon), Clash of the Titans 2 could begin filming as early as January 2011. The film earned a weak 30% on Rotten Tomatoes, but that’s rendered meaningless by its $486.8 haul at the worldwide box office.

The first film’s director, Louis Leterrier, took a pass on handling the sequel, so the folks at Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have been on the lookout for a replacement. At the top of the list is Jonathan Liebesman, the man responsible for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning and the upcoming sci-fi actioner Battle: Los Angeles.

On the bright side, Clash of the Titans 2 will be shot in 3D bypassing one of the first film’s most significant faults, going the post-conversion route. I would have been glad to drop the extra cash on the Clash ticket had the majority of the movie actually been in 3D. At least the suits took something from the negative reviews, the large majority of which tore apart the shoddy imagery.

Keep an eye out for more details on this one. With Sam Worthington expected to shoot Avatar 2 sometime later in 2011, this one will need to be squared away ASAP.
