Andrew Koppel, the 40-year-old son of legendary ‘Nightline’ anchorman Ted Koppel, accidental died from a mix of a lethal dose of illegal and prescription drugs and alcohol, PEOPLE reported on June 18.  The New York City Medical Examiner reported that Andrew died on May 31 from the combined effects of alcohol, heroin, cocaine diazepam (the generic form of Valium) and Levamisole (a substance used to cut other drugs).

The day Andrew’s body was found, he began drinking at noon at a Hell’s Kitchen bar with friend Russell Wimberly.  The two then went to the Washington Heights apartment of Belinda Caban, a friend of Wimberly.  Andrew went to bed, and when Wimberley went to check on him a few hours later, he found he wasn’t breathing and called 911.

The Associated Press (AP) said paramedics estimated that Andrew was dead for several hours.  AP also reported that Andrew, who is survived by his girlfriend, Ilona Lieberman, and their baby daughter, had two DUI arrests in the past.
