The lyrics for the Beatles song ‘A Day in the Life,’ the final song on the album ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,’ were purchased by an American collector on June 18 for $1.2 million, the Associated Press (AP) is reporting. They sold for so much because the lyrics were handwritten by John Lennon.

The bid was placed at Sotheby’s auction house via phone, and exceeded the pre-sale expectation of $500,000 to $800,000. Sotheby’s declined to release the identity of the buy, but did say it was a private collector.

The lyrics to the song, which was ranked by Rolling Stone magazine at number 26 on its list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, were written in cursive and capital letters on a double-sided sheet of paper. Lennon also made edits to the lyrics, which stirred controversy when it was released in 1967, as people believed the line ‘I’d love to turn you on’ supported illegal drug use.
