Actor Tony Curtis died in his Las Vegas home on September 29, Entertainment Tonight is reporting. The star of such movies as ‘Sweet Smell of Success’ and ‘Some Like It Hot’ died from cardiac arrest at 9:25 pm MDT, Clark County Coroner Mike Murphy said. The 85-year-old actor’s estranged daughter, actress Jamie Lee Curtis, confirmed the news to the entertainment show.
In 1958, Curtis received his only Academy Award nomination for his role in ‘The Defiant Ones.’ In response to his later snubs from the Academy, Curtis told the Washington Post in 2002 that “My happiness and privilege is that my audience around the world is supportive of me, so I don’t need the Academy.”
Curtis’ popularity faded in the late 1960s, and he turned tod rugs and alcohol to deal with his increasingly infrequent roles. He told Interview magazine in the 1980s that “I wasn’t getting the kinds of parts I wanted…But I had to go through the drug inundation before I was able to come to grips with it.” He underwent a 30-day treatment at the Betty Ford Center in Rancho Mirage in the early 1980s.
