Now that Katie Holmes has been imitating Jackie Kennedy in real life in an effort to prepare for her role as the First Lady in the upcoming eight-party miniseries ‘The Kennedys, the History Channel has canceled the special, TVGuide.com is reporting. A&E Television Networks, which owns the History Channel, decided that “this dramatic interpretation is not fit for the History brand.”
The mini-series, which also stars Greg Kinnear as President John F. Kennedy, was scheduled to air this spring. ‘The Kennedys,’ which cost the History Channel several million dollars to make and was directed by Jon Cassar, ignited controversy when it was first announced in December 2009. As a result, the History Channel consulted history experts and revised the script.
A rep for the History Channel said that after network officials watched the series in its entirety, they felt it was “produced and acted with the highest quality.” However, they recognized “historical fiction is an important medium for storytelling.” The rep added that the officials felt this was the right decision for the network.
