Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

Title: Kidnapped Directed By: Miguel Ángel Vivas Starring: Fernando Cayo, Ana Wagener, Manuela Vellés, Xoel Yáñez, Guillermo Barrientos, Dritan Biba, Martijn Kuiper Yes, we want our horror films to be scary, but being too scary is a major genre pitfall. Often this stems from a film being exploitative and dousing us in incredibly gory or disturbing visuals, but sometimes we get the beautiful juxtaposition of a film being so well done that it feels too real. What can be more genuinely horrifying than that? Jaime, Marta (Fernando Cayo and Ana Wagener) and their daughter, Isa (Manuela Vellés), move into a gorgeous new home. Marta wants to have a family dinner…

Warner Bros Adds $9 Million To Green Lantern Post Budget

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

“Green Lantern” is due out in theaters on June 17th. That’s less than a month and a half from now, and in that short time frame, Warner Bros. has added an additional $9 million to their post-production budget. This $9 million will go into hiring visual effects houses and additional staff for more visual effects to reach its June release date. But is this a sign for a troubled production? Not necessarily, Warner Bros received criticism for rushing the first “Green Lantern” trailer, to make the “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1″ release date, with very limited visual effects, which angered comic book fans and pundits alike. Coincidentally,…

Tangled

DVD Column: Tangled, How Do You Know and The Taqwacores

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

Coming on the heels of 2009′s underperforming The Princess and the Frog, Disney rolled the dice yet again on a fairly low-fi tale of storybook royalty, in the form of Tangled, based on the fairytale of Rapunzel. A huge $575 million worldwide hit, the movie is a well-rendered throwback that underscores the still existent pleasures of traditional storytelling, amidst all the glitz and glam of more forcibly lively animated fare. Nicely balancing a sense of classic sentimentality with contemporary, gender-equal romance and adventure, Tangled features engaging vocal turns by Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi — as the locked-away Rapunzel and rakish bandit Flynn Rider, respectively — and has enough going on…
