Box Office Report: Warner Bros. goes Green; Popper’s Penguins poops out

Posted by Joe Belcastro On June - 19 - 2011 0 Comment

The box office results for the weekend of June 17th – 19th has another man in tights taking over at the top. Green Lantern showed some power in its opening weekend, while Jim Carrey sees his shining star begin to wither. Here are the studio estimates:

1. Green Lantern ($52.6 million)

2. Super 8 ($22.1 million)

3. Mr. Popper’s Penguins ($18.2 million)

4. X-Men: First Class ($11.5 million)

5. The Hangover Part II ($9.6 million)

6. Kung Fu Panda 2 ($8.7 million)

7. Bridesmaids ($7.4 million)

8. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides ($6.2 million)

9. Midnight in Paris ($5.2 million)

10. Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer ($2.2 million)

Analysis

Green Lantern‘ is off to a decent start considering it may have had one of the most lackluster marketing campaigns in summer blockbuster history. Everything that was teased (set photos, trailer, etc.) was immediately slammed by fans on an infinite of message boards. Then, as the official barrage of promo fodder came flying out, it seemed to arrive fairly late considering its “tentpole” status. All that said, the budget is around $150 million (after Louisiana tax incentives) and factoring in the piss-poor reviews and reaction from its core fan base, this one will be struggling to earn green for Warners.

Jim Carrey returned to lead a summer blockbuster, but ‘Mr. Popper’s Penguins‘ is a far “honk” from grossing what the perennial box office champ is used to. The reported budget is lingering around the $60 million mark; and like ‘Green Lantern’, the critics were not kind to this guy either. While fam-friendly flicks tend to hang around longer in the top ten during the summer, ‘Popper’s’ has its work cut out for it and will be relying on a strong DVD and On-Demand run.

Bridesmaids‘ currently has the longest streak in the top ten with 6 weeks. Its domestic total is now up to $137 million. Production budget was just $32.5 million.

Flop Alert: Not to sound like a broken record but ‘Judy Moody and the Not Bummer Summer’ is going nowhere fast. Domestically, the flick has reached $11 million but it will not have the stamina of its title character in recouping the $20 million that was spent on this sucker.

Sleeper Hit: ‘Super 8′. Real simple folks: Only dropped 40% from its opening weekend (excellent for the summer season) and Steven Spielberg & J.J. Abrams only rang up a production bill of $50 million. Its domestic total sits at just under $73 million.

This Friday we have polar opposites hitting theaters. ‘Cars 2‘ will cradle the fam-friendly crowd, while ‘Bad Teacher‘ will hope to capitalize on the popular R-rated comedy trend of success. Reviews will be right here my fellow Shockers.
