Interview: Joshua Leonard Talks Higher Ground, The Lie

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

Few actors get to star in a monster commercial smash that is also a zeitgeist hit, but that was Joshua Leonard’s experience with “The Blair Witch Project,” which turned a meager $60,000 production budget into almost $250 million in worldwide theatrical receipts, and owned the summer of 1999 (and beyond, in the form of countless spoofs, homages and far less inspired rip-offs) like no other indie movie of its time. Leonard continued to act over the years, and achieved a second peak of artistic acclaim two years back in Lynn Shelton’s “Humpday,” in which he and a fellow heterosexual friend (Mark Duplass) find themselves locked in a pact/dare to make…

Semper Fi: Always Faithful Movie Review

Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

Title: Semper Fi: Always Faithful Directors: Rachel Libert and Tony Hardmon If one conducted a day-long survey of random persons from any given major metropolitan street, and asked them to name the biggest polluter in the country, it’s doubtful that the Department of Defense’s name would come up at all, and if it did then almost certainly one wouldn’t need a second hand to keep track of that tally. And yet that’s the central assertion of “Semper Fi: Always Faithful,” a damning new documentary about drinking water contaminants at a military training base spanning a period of 30 years. At once emotionally powerful and a little more under-sketched than one might like it…

Interview: Bereavement's Brett Rickaby

Monday, August 29th, 2011

Brett Rickaby has made quite the name for himself in the horror genre over the past year. No, he didn’t have a lead role in The Crazies, but thanks to a particularly disturbing performance, he practically wound up becoming the face of the film. Still, that was only Rickaby scratching the surface of his potential because it’s in Stevan Mena’s Bereavement that the actor really gets the opportunity to show what he’s capable of and, boy, does he seize the opportunity. In 2005′s Malevolence, Mena introduced us to Martin Bristol, a six-year-old boy who was snatched up and emerges as a ruthless killer years later. What happens during that time…
