According to The Huffington Post, Morgan Freeman said in an interview with Piers Morgan Friday that he believes the Tea Party’s stance is rooted in racism.
When asked whether President Obama’s presidency has made racism in America better or worse, Freeman says that he feels it has made it worse because Obama has now become a Republican/Tea Party target.
“Their stated policy, publicly stated, is to do whatever it takes to see to it that Obama only serves one term,” said Freeman. “[W]hat does that, what underlines that? ‘Screw the country. We’re going to do whatever we do to get this black man, we can, we’re going to do whatever we can to get this black man outta here.” He also said the Tea Party is “a racist thing.”
For Freeman, theTea Party’s rise shows how there is still hatred of others in America. “[I]t just shows the dark, weak underside of America. We’re supposed to be better than that. We really are. That’s…why all those people were in tears when Obama was elected president…And then it just sort of started turning because these people surfaced like stirring up muddy water.”
He also said that while he understands why Obama doesn’t fight back in order to stick to his principles, he wishes Obama would be more aggressive now.
