Tobey Maguire has agreed to pay $80,000 to buy his way out of a poker lawsuit he was named in in June 2011, TMZ is reporting. The ‘Great Gatsby’ actor was one of 22 people sued for taking part in Ponzi schemer Bradley Ruderman’s illegal underground poker games in 2007.
The 35-year-old ‘Spider-Man’ star won more than $300,000 from Ruderman, a Beverly Hills hedge fund manager. He embezzled investor funds in order to pay off his debt to Maguire and others who played in his illegal gambling games. The lawsuit came after the clients whose funds Ruderman embezzled filed a series of civil suits against the biggest winners, to recoup some of the money they lost.
The FBI investigated the CEO of Ruderman Capital Partners, discovering he lost $25 million of investor money in the poker games. The games were held twice weekly in the Beverly Hills Four Seasons hotel and at the Viper Room on Sunset Boulevard.
Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck also participated in the no-limit Texas Hold ‘em games, which had a buy-in of $100,000. However, they weren’t included in the lawsuit. Others who were included in the lawsuit are ‘The Notebook’ director Nick Cassavetes, ‘Welcome Back, Kotter’ star Gabe Kaplan and film producer-Shannon Doherty’s ex-husband, Rick Salomon.
Ruderman was arrested for holding the poker games without licenses or permits. He is serving time in a Texas jail until 2018, as he was convicted of two counts of wire fraud and two counts of investment adviser fraud.
