James Cameron Sued For $1.5 Billion For Stealing Avatar Idea

Aspiring sci-fi screenwriter Bryant Moore has filed a lawsuit against James Cameron for stealing his idea for the hit 2009 film ‘Avatar,’ TMZ is reporting. Moore’s lawsuit is the second in as many weeks, claiming the famed director didn’t come up with the idea for the Academy Award-winning movie. He is also suing 20th Century Fox, which distributed ‘Avatar,’ for more than $1.5 billion in actual damages and more than $1 in punitive damages.

Moore, who has written the screenplays for ‘Aquatica’ and ‘Descendants: The Pollination,’ is looking for more than $2 billion. He’s claiming Cameron used the two scripts as the inspiration for ‘Avatar,’ and points out numerous similarities between his two screenplays and the director’s film. The similarities Moore points to include “bioluminescent flora/plant life, unbreathable atmospheres, matriarch support of hero vs. heroine, spiritual connections to environment and reincarnation, appearance of mist in scene, sunlight to moonlight, crackling from gargantuan foliage, blue skin/green skin and battle scene on limbs/branches.”

Cameron’s attorney, Bert Fields, as well as Fox, said the lawsuit isn’t true. “Mr. Cameron was demonstrably the author of ‘Avatar,’” Fields has said. “We can prove that, and we intend to prove that in court.” He added that any claim that the director didn’t pen the screenplay is “entirely without merit.” Fox called the lawsuit baseless, and added “we look forward to vigorously defending our position.”
