Ever since the news came out about “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air” reunion picture that was taken at a charity event and uploaded to Will Smith’s Facebook page, people have been wondering why neither of the actresses who played Aunt Vivian were there. Now, however, we now know why Janet Hubert, the actress who portrayed Aunt Viv in the first half of the show’s life, didn’t show.
According to The Huffington Post, Hubert said that she didn’t show up to event because “[t]here will never be a reunion…as I will never do anything with that as*hole like Will Smith,” she said to TMZ recently. She went on to say that he is an egomaniac and hasn’t grown up.
The feud between Hubert and Smith isn’t new; it came to a head in 1993 when she was let go from the show. According to what she wrote in her 2010 memoirs, she was only scheduled to work for 10 weeks during the next season’s production and couldn’t do television appearances due to terms in her contract, making it hard for her to earn a living.
She also said in an interview with BlackAmericaWeb that Smith would make racial jokes about her dark skin tone to the audience.
Smith, however, stated in a 1993 Atlanta radio interview that Hubert wanted the show to be about her. He also went on to say that she resented the fact that she had to work with someone she considered an upstart in the acting business.
You can read more about her reasons for not coming to the reunion at The Huffington Post. Personally, I’d like to know the other half of this story from Smith himself.
