There are a lot of Hollywood-watchers that are also big fans of “Akira,” and those people have been very adamant about their ideas concerning the movie adaptation of seminal manga and anime film “Akira.” Mainly, their ideas consist of “This movie is going to suck.” Those people who have been against the film from day one finally have their prayers answered.

According to an exclusive from The Hollywood Reporter, “Akira” has shut down its production offices in Vancouver.

According to the site, the cause for shutting down the production for yet another time is due to issues concerning the budget and casting. According to one insider, everyone is being told to go home.

There seems to be a last-ditch effort to try and salvage the film yet again, with producers Jennifer Kiloran Davisson of Appian Way and Andrew Lazar of Mad Chance meeting with director Jaume Collet-Serra for the next two weeks to try and work out the film’s script. It is uncertain if Steve Kloves, the scribe for “Harry Potter” who was hired to rewrite the script a year ago, will be asked to help. However, if the issues around casting and budget will not be solved, then insiders say the entire project could be shelved, even though another insider said that Warner Bros. is adamant about getting an “Akira” movie made.

This latest version of “Akira” already had Garrett Hedlund (“Tron Legacy”) signed on to star as Kaneda with Kristen Stewart (?!), Ken Watanabe and Helena Bonham Carter in varying stages of the signing-on process. Also, the film’s budget–which was very expensive under the film’s former director Albert Hughes–had already been cut in half by Collet-Serra. The budget under Collet-Serra was set at around $90 million.
