Benedict Cumberbatch, along with his co-worker and friend Martin Freeman, are having a stellar year already. In fact, they were having a stellar 2012 in 2011–Freeman was already filming “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” and Cumberbatch is expected to contribute his part to the film as Smaug and the Necromancer, both Cumberbatch and Freeman were finishing up on Series 2 of “Sherlock” (which is AMAZING), Cumberbatch had a secondary role in “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” (which is still in theaters now!) and now, news has come out that Cumberbatch is going to be the main villain in J.J. Abrams’s “Star Trek 2.”

According to CinemaBlend and Deadline, Cumberbatch nailed the audition for what is being called “a lead role,” and Variety reported that it is the same role Edgar Ramirez tried out for last month. It was heavily rumored that the villain would be Khan, but before writing this article, I looked up this same story up on several other entertainment sites, and everyone’s saying that Cumberbatch’s not playing Khan, so I think it’s safe to assume that Cumberbatch is not going to play Khan. Besides, can you picture Cumberbatch playing Khan? I would go along with some other people saying that his intense cheekbones would suggest that he’s playing a Vulcan, but I bet he’s playing some obscure villain that will turn out to be awesome.

What do you think about this, and who do you think Cumberbatch will play? Give your opinions in the comments section below.
