This is the final episode of “Pan Am”‘s first season. It might be the last episode ever for the show, considering how the ratings have been really bad. But who knows–maybe it’ll come back. It seems to have a loyal fanbase, but so did “The Playboy Club” and better shows that that, like “Rubicon.”
Anyway, the synopsis for this week’s episode is a good one, considering we get some good things happening for the often tortured Colette. While working on the Clipper Majestic (destination: Rome, Italy) the meets a dashing man named Omar who asks her to accompany him while he takes in the city. The only issues surrounding Omar is that he’s on a plane without any money and doesn’t delve into his past. This raises Dean’s suspicions about him since the Italian customs officers have alerted him to someone smuggling black market products on the plane. However, we learn that Omar isn’t the smuggler–he’s a prince! After learning about Omar’s true identity, Dean relents his pursuit of Colette and finally lets her find happiness.
Meanwhile, Capt. Broyles tries to trap Maggie into his smuggling ring, citing that he and Maggie are both resourceful, cunning people. However, Maggie shows she’s better than him by deciding not to help him. Broyles also gets caught once Dean puts two and two together.
Kate has another mission in which she must use her developing pickpocket skills to take some vital information away from counter-intelligence before it gets to Soviet hands. After several mistakes, she finally gets the information she needs.
Back in New York, Laura’s learned that her private nude pictures have been sold to a art gallery. Horrified, she tries to buy them back through the use of a check Amanda gives her, but once she internalizes the fact that people see her as being brave and a revolutionary role model, she decides to embrace them, especially since Andy Warhol wants to meet her. (Couldn’t she get fired over these pictures? I don’t think Pan Am would appreciate this type of publicity.)
Also, Ted’s learned of Amanda’s kiss from Maggie and starts to worry about the stability of their relationship. Amanda finally tells him the truth and says that if they get married, he will be able to see who he wants (i.e. Laura) and she’ll be able to see who she wants (i.e. other women). Does Ted decide to go along with her idea?
We’ll never really know (until the next season comes around, hopefully) since the show ends on a somber note–the assassination of President Kennedy. The bigger cliffhanger, though, is if “Pan Am” will come back to ABC at all.
