The Parents Television Council (PTC) is claiming NBC failed Americans during Super Bowl XLVI’s halftime show by enabling M.I.A. to flip off the camera during a close-up shot, TMZ is reporting. The parents organization released a statement, saying “It is unfortunate that a spectacular sporting event was overshadowed once again by broadcasting the selfish acts of a desperate performer.”
PTC is demanding punishment, saying NBC and NFL knew what could happen during the performance, since they chose a lineup featuring “performers who have based their careers on shock profanity and titillation,” including Madonna and Nicki Minaj. The group was also upset for failing to block the image from the television broadcast, especially after the highly publicized “nipplegate” incident between Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake in 2004 on CBS.
While PTC isn’t asking for an apology, saying one would “ring hollow after yet another slap in the face to families,” instead calling for action. The group said “either the NFL and NBC will take immediate steps to hold those accountable for this offensive material in front of a hundred million Americans, or they will feebly sit back and do nothing.”
It’s been reported that the NFL and NBC had a contract with M.I.A., saying she would have to pay a fine for any offensive actions. But the football league and the television network have yet to officially comment on the alleged contract or PTC’s statement.
