In the wake of Katie Holmes filing for divorce from Tom Cruise, the ‘Jack & Jill’ star also reportedly left Scientology because she doesn’t want the church interrogating her six-year-old daughter, Suri, TMZ is reporting. Holmes witnessed Cruise’s two children with ex-wife Nicole Kidman undergo the Scientology ritual of sec checking in 2005, which she found troubling. She feared that her estranged husband would make Suri participate in the same process.
In sec checking, the person being interrogated holds electrode handles on an e-meter. They’re then asked a series of personal questions that help the Church of Scientology determine areas of spiritual distress.
During the process, the auditor conducting the interrogation asks such questions as, what has somebody told you not to tell, have you ever lied to a teacher and have you ever gotten yourself dirty on purpose? Other questions include, have you ever bullied a smaller child and have you ever decided you did not like some member of your family?
Several ex-Scientologists claim that sec checking is a mild form of psychological terrorism. They say the questions are designed, in part, to get children to give details and secrets about their parents.
