Russell Brand will be charged with a crime after he threw a paparazzi’s iPhone throw a window in New Orleans in March, TMZ is reporting. There were initially conflicting reports over whether he would be charged with a felony. But law enforcement officials confirmed that the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s office has decided to move forward with the charges against the actor and comedian. Brand will be prosecuted on a charge of misdemeanor criminal damage to property.
The ‘Rock of Ages’ star was initially named in a police report on March 12. He took a cell phone from a photographer while walking down a street and threw it through a law office window, causing $240 in damage. Brand turned himself in after the incident, and then took to Twitter to explain his actions. He said “since Steve Jobs died I cannot hear to see anyone use an iPhone irreverently, what I did was a tribute to his memory.”
Brand is getting ready for a legal battle in the case. He hired a high-powered New Orleans attorney after the incident to fight possible charges in the case. If sentenced, he faces six months in jail.
