Green Day singer Billie Joe Armstrong was heavily drinking while performing in Las Vegas over the weekend, which led him to enter rehab, Celebuzz is reporting. Claudia Suarez Wright, the ex-wife of the punk rock band’s drummer, Frank Edwin Wright III (Tre Cool), confirmed the news, saying Armstrong’s with his family and is doing okay.
Claudia, whose son is the goldchild of Armstrong, revealed that the singer was drinking in Las Vegas, including the night of Green Day’s show. She added that the singer’s decision to enter rehab, which she described as difficult, was unrelated to with his hospitalization earlier this month in Italy. She said “he was actually sick in Italy and it was not from drinking.”
The news of Armstrong’s entry into rehab, which comes after he was sober for 12 months, comes as a surprise to his family. His aunt, Judith Armstrong, said he was fine on Saturday. “We were on an airplane together and he was fine,” she added.
Armstrong’s drinking comes after the 40-year-old singer went on a rant on Friday while onstage during Green Day’s performance at the iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas. When the band was given its one-minute warning to wrap their set, the singer screamed “You’re f–king kidding me. What the f–k! I’m not f–king Justin Bieber, you motherf–kers . . I got one minute, one minute left.”
Green Day later issued a statement on their official Facebook page on Sunday. The statement said Armstrong was “seeking treatment for substance abuse. We would like everyone to know that our set was not cut short by Clear Channel and to apologize to those we offended at the iHeartRadio Festival in Las Vegas. We regretfully must postpone some of our upcoming promotional appearances.”
Claudia also said that Armstrong’s wife, Adrienne Nesser Armstrong, and their two children, 17-year-old Joseph and 14-year-old Jakob, were by his side while entering rehab. She added “I want to give my unconditional support in a time of need.
