The box office results for the weekend of June 28th – 30th has Monsters University able to maintain its financial GPA despite two new students (The Heat and White House Down) trying to take over on the B.O. campus. Meanwhile, Man of Steel tries to make one more solid push to reach the $300 million mark. Here are the studio estimates:

Analysis
Monsters University held strong, dropping just 44% from its opening jaunt last week. In doing so, the flick joins Fast & Furious 6, and Iron Man 3, as the only flicks this year to hold the top honors for consecutive weekends; a tough chore in the summer months. Domestically, this has earned $172.4 million off a $200 million production budget – standard for Pixar products.
As for the newbies, it’s spins two very different tales…
The Heat is in ideal shape as it came in with a relatively low $43 million production budget and generated fairly positive reviews across the board. Melissa McCarthy can now tout her largest (no pun) opening weekend ever as she watches her hustling star rise higher.
White House Down may already be down-and-out. Saddled with a $150 million production budget and a mixed reception, this copycat (Olympus Has Fallen is essentially the same movie that opened in March) will need help getting more people the polls if you will. Unless international audiences are intrigued by watching America’s capital getting destroyed (and why lie, there is a draw for that), this is on Flop Alert.
After 3 weeks, Man of Steel has leaped to $248.1 million. Hitting $300 million on the home front will be close unless a small contingent of fans are giving this multiple looks.
Star Trek Into Darkness currently holds the longest streak in the top ten with 7 weeks. Domestically, it has flown to $220.5 million off a production budget of $190 million.
