“The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” is, of course, a hit. Tons of fans have made their trek to the theater and have come away happy and excited for the last installment. But while fans are busy talking about the awesomeness of the dwarves, Smaug (voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch), the elves and the action, there’s one thing that you might have overlooked–Stephen Colbert’s cameo in one of the Lake-Town scenes.

Colbert, a self-professed Tolkien fanatic who also hosted a week-long “Hobbit” fest on his show, “The Colbert Report,” garnered himself a small cameo in the film. Colbert appears in the film during the scene when the Master of Lake-Town’s (Stephen Fry) spies are keeping track of Bard the Bowman’s (Luke Evans) whereabouts. The eagle-eyed out there probably chuckled in the theater when they saw it, but if you missed it, a .gif of his small performance has been captured. So if you’re like me and didn’t immediately recognize Colbert, you can now watch the .gif and pretend you were in on the gag all along. Entertainment Weekly writes that Colbert breaks into Sondheim song; I’m inclined to think that’s a joke

What did you think of Colbert’s role in the film? Were you able to catch it? Give your opinions in the comments section below!
