According to overnight reports in UK newspapers, the 49-year-old was found hanging from a scarf in what has been labeled an apparent suicide – although there has been no official confirmation of these details.

Madonna issued a statement saying: “This is a horrible and tragic loss. I’m so upset. I loved L’Wren’s work and she was always so generous with me.”

Wintour described Scott as “a total perfectionist… always unbelievably generous, gracious, kind and so much fun.”

She added: “Her old world American manners and charm were from another time, but her sensibility was always fiercely modern.”

L’Wren’s partner of 13 years, Sir Mick Jagger, was dining at a restaurant in Perth, Australia, when aides informed him of the news. The Stones have now cancelled their forthcoming tour date in the city, amid reports that Sir Mick, 70, is planning to fly to New York.

Others who paid tribute to L’Wren include US actress Olivia Munn of The Newsroom, Sex In The City star Sarah Jessica Parker and supermodel Christie Brinkley.

Munn said: “She was an amazing soul, talented artist and an unbelievably giving friend. RIP.”

Sarah Jessica Parker added: “There was a delight to her that is hard to imagine extinguished.”

Meanwhile Brinkley tweeted: “Rest in peace, L’Wren Scott. You’ll forever be missed.”

The BBC reported that according accounts filed in the UK, Scott’s firm, LS Fashion Limited, owed creditors about $7.6m (£4.6m), as of 31 December 2012. It had assets of $1.7m.

Meanwhile Jagger’s representatives angrily denied reports in New York of a split between Sir Mick and L’Wren. A statement said: “The story in the New York Post re a split between Mick Jagger and L’Wren Scott is 100 % untrue.  There is absolutely no basis in fact to this story. It is a horrible and inaccurate piece of gossip during this very tragic time for Mick.”
