Remember the late ’80s and early ’90s when “American Gladiators” ruled the airwaves? That was a great show. The show came back to NBC in 2008, hosted by Hulk Hogan and Laila Ali, but that reboot didn’t hold water. However, “American Gladiators” isn’t giving up–the show is planning on coming back to television once again.

According to TV Guide, “American Gladiators” is getting rebooted once again. Arthur Smith, the person behind “American Ninja Warrior” and “Hell’s Kitchen” is over the reboot. Of course, the reboot will attempt to modernize the show, but strangely enough, the series is being pushed into a much darker direction.

“It’s a little darker, more intense, more serious,” Smith said to TV Guide. “It’s a little less red, white and blue. And there’s no spandex. Spandex has left the building.” How dark can it get, though? I thought the cheese factor was what made the show great. Is it now going to be like The Thunderdome?

As to what the final product will look like remains to be seen; the show is still being shopped around and no networks have bitten yet. But hopefully, we’ll see what the new vision of “Gladiators” will be in due time.
