Sometimes the most intolerable circumstances can ultimately lead to surprising, but overall constructive, lifestyle changes. That’s certainly true for the young mother and daughter in the upcoming drama, ‘All We Had,’ as they finally find a community they can connect with, following a devastating break-up. The family’s struggle to survive unfolds in Katie Holmes’ feature film directorial debut.

The filmmaker also produced and portrayed the mother in ‘All We Had,’ which was written by ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ director, Josh Boone, and Jill Killington. ‘All We Had’ is based on the 2014 novel of the same name by Annie Weatherwax. The film adaptation is set to be distributed in theaters and On Demand by Gravitas Ventures on December 9. The national release follows the indie movie’s premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City in April, where it received critical acclaim. In addition to Holmes, ‘All We Had’ also stars Stefania Owen, Luke Wilson, Richard Kind, Mark Consuelos, Judy Greer and Eve Lindley.

Gravitas Ventures has released the following synopsis for ‘All We Had’:

For fifteen-year-old Ruthie Carmichael (Stefania Owen) and her young mother, Rita (Katie Holmes), life has never been stable. Fleeing Rita’s latest boyfriend, they find themselves living out of their beat-up car, and heading east in search of a better life. When money runs out and their car breaks down, they become stranded in a small town where Rita ultimately lands a steady job waitressing at Tiny’s, a local diner where they begin to develop a family: tender-hearted Marty (Richard Kind), the owner of the diner, and Pam (Eve Lindley), a transgender waitress with big dreams who becomes Ruthie’s closest friend.
