Dru Cutler's Bring Closer the Distance EP Review
Singer-songwriter Dru Cutler releases his EP, ‘Bring Closer the Distance.’

Singer: Dru Cutler

EP: ‘Bring Closer the Distance’

Reflecting on the intense shift in America’s modern social and political systems, and how that change is transforming both personal and professional connections, is a powerful motivator for the country’s current artists. Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter, Dru Cutler, is powerfully contemplating how present society is influencing how he relates to the people in his life in his latest EP, ‘Bring Closer the Distance.’ The two-track album, which is serving as a preview for his upcoming full-length record of the same name, intensely and emotionally shares his personal stories, and showcases his vulnerability, as he explores his feelings about his relationships.

The A-side of ‘Bring Closer the Distance’ features one of Cutler’s original songs, ‘Oceanside.’ The entry, which is fueled by an acoustic guitar that’s reminiscent of Bruce Springstein and John Mellencamp’s rock and Americana instrumentation from the 1980s, is stunningly inspired by his predecessors. Cutler’s poetic and exhilarating lyrics are also driven by political sentiment, which leave an intense impact on listeners.

The well mixed tune, whose rhythm is also driven by precisely produced drums, emotionally explores how the musician is still haunted by the pictures of a person he was once close to in his memory. Cutler also passionately notes that even though they’re now separated, he feels as though they’ll remain connected by their memories.

‘Bring Closer the Distance’s B-side is a gritty and tantalizing reimagining of Leonard Cohen’s classic waltz song, ‘Dance Me to the End of Love.’ The New York City-based musician’s baritone voice enticingly maintains the feel of the original track, while also giving it his own unique spin. Cutler proves his emotional range of vocals as he emotionally asks the person he cares about to dance him through the panic until he feels safe. He also alluringly captures the original tune’s call for people to support each other when the world brings them down, in a dark and moody tone that perfectly echos Cohen’s compelling message.

Cutler’s natural intensity and musical ability perfectly provides the foundation for his reflections about the solace that his relationships provide him during times of intense tribulation. Reflecting on both personal and universal issues on his two latest songs, the EP version of ‘Bring Closer the Distance’ dominantly explores the intense changes in America’s current social and political systems. On both his original composition and tribute to a musician he strong admires, Cutler impressively and vulnerably shares his deep feelings about the people in his life.
