One of the most important aspects of life for adolescents is for them to learn the all-important-lesson of determining their identities and sense of purpose in life. That vital lesson certainly applies to actress Zoe Renee in her upcoming drama, ‘Jinn.’ In honor of the film’s distribution in theaters on November 15, and then on VOD and Digital the following day, its distribuotr, Orion Classics, has unveiled its official trailer.

‘Jinn’ was written, directed and co-produced by Nijla Mu’min. In addition to Renee, the coming-of-age movie also stars Simone Missick, Kelvin Harrison Jr,. Dorian Missick, Hisham Tawfiq and Kelly Jenrette.

The drama had its world premiere at this year’s SXSW, where it won the Special Jury Award for writing. ‘Jinn’ also won awards at the American Black Film Festival for Best Screenplay and Best Actor (Renee), the Blackstar Film Festival for Best Feature Narrative and Audience Award and at the Roxbury Film Festival for Best Narrative Feature.

“‘Jinn’ is a coming of age film that deals with the struggles to find one’s true identity amidst familial and religious influences,” said Mu’min. “As our media landscape becomes more inclusive and nuanced, this film offers a specific, yet universal story of identity, first love and shifting family relationships.”

In ‘Jinn,’ Summer (Renee) is a 17-year old carefree black girl, whose world is turned upside down when her mother, a popular meteorologist named Jade Jennings (Missick), abruptly converts to Islam and becomes a different person. Jade’s transformation ultimately prompts her daughter to reevaluate her identity.
