Who hasn’t made up stories about the hermit or creepy neighbor next door? Writer-director Karl Mueller is here to make you even more apprehensive of the hooded weirdo who might dwell right down the hall or road in his Tribeca Film Festival Midnight Program entry, “Mr. Jones.” The film hones in on Scott and Penny (Jon Foster and Sarah Jones). He’s a filmmaker in desperate need of some inspiration and she gives up everything to head out to a secluded cabin to help him get moving on a nature documentary. However, while they’re out there, Scott realizes there’s something much more interesting to film than picturesque scenery; he’s got the  [ Read More ]

Lionsgate closed out the presentation lineup with a bang courtesy of actor/comedian Kevin Hart. It truly was quite nice to hear studio bigwigs thank the CinemaCon crowd for giving their films the best possible homes, run through past hits and tease potential upcoming blockbusters, but when you’ve got an effortless, foulmouthed comedian like Hart running things, the presentation winds up feeling more like an entertaining show. Hart dished out amusing gags, noting that it’s his job to keep us all from falling asleep and warning the audience, “I’m gonna cuss a couple times,” before spitting out about a half dozen naughty words that brought out the immaturity in many. Hart  [ Read More ]

Hemlock Grove Season 1

Bloody Disgusting was the first to show this creepy motion poster for “Hemlock Grove.” The poster itself is simple, but the movement from the spazzing hand is enough to give you a small hint of the insanity that will take place in this boundary-pushing show. Check out the motion picture either at Bloody Disgusting or right here below the post. “Hemlock Grove” will premiere all 13 episodes on Netflix tonight, April 19. The series is from producer Eli Roth and stars Famke Janssen, Dougray Scott, Bill Skarsgård, Landon Liboiron, Penelope Mitchell and Freya Tingley. The series focuses on a murder mystery in a small town that eventually shows the town  [ Read More ]

Tom-Cruise-in-Oblivion-Thumb

As the weekend’s only new wide release, all eyes are on the Tom Cruise-starrer, “Oblivion.” With summer movie buzz already in the air, the film could benefit from tentpole hype, possibly earning just less than “G.I. Joe: Retaliation,” kicking off its run with a $35 million start. Should “42” take a weekend two dip slightly higher than “Moneyball,” it’ll retain 55% of its opening weekend profits for another $15 million. As for “Scary Movie 5,” it’s poised to fall and fall fast. Should it drop like “Vampires Suck” and “Meet the Spartans,” it’ll wave goodbye to 60% of its opening profits for a mere $6 million second weekend out. With  [ Read More ]

White-House-Down-Elysium-This-Is-The-End

Tonight was the night for Sony Pictures Entertainment. President of worldwide distribution Rory Bruer assumed the podium and appeared to be having more fun than anyone, cracking jokes and recalling funny memories from past CinemaCon presentations. Just as he suggests crazy shenanigans are bound to go down this year too, a quartet of bugle players storm the stage from one end while a pair of cushy chairs are carried in from the other, one with Adam Sandler and Salma Hayek and the other with David Spade and Kevin James. Say what you want about the comedic value of “Grown Ups,” but in the flesh, the group knows how to put  [ Read More ]

It’s on to Warner Bros. Pictures and their presentation, “The Big Picture.” Warner Bros. domestic distribution president Dan Fellman and international distribution president Veronkia Kwan Vanderberg were on hand to run through the company’s 90 years of success, giving extra attention to its beloved big Best Picture winner, “Argo,” after which Warner Bros. Pictures Group president Jeff Robinov took the stage to unveil footage and trailers for films on the studio’s 2013 lineup. The Great Gatsby First up was “The Great Gatsby.” Director Baz Luhrmann couldn’t be on hand to introduce the latest extended look at the film himself, but sent along a video message in which he called the  [ Read More ]

Catching-Fire-CinemaCon-Thumb

Tonight’s the night. Paramount is due to kick things off here at Caesars Palace for CinemaCon with a presentation featuring its 2013 lineup followed by a screening of Michael Bay’s “Pain & Gain.” But before we bring you the goods on that, how about a tour through the halls of the event? We shared a number of brand new posters making their big debut right here at Caesars yesterday, but still have a ton more to show off. We’ve got images of the movie-decorated escalators, a bunch of CinemaCon banners, and a slew of movie posters and standees on display. Of the bunch, my personal favorite is the poster for  [ Read More ]

CinemaCon 2013: Oldboy Poster

Oldboy-Thumb

The first promotional item for Spike Lee’s remake of Chan-wook Park’s “Oldboy” has hit CinemaCon. The 2003 original focused on Oh Dae-su, a man who’s kidnapped and held in a hotel room-like prison for years until he’s suddenly released with no explanation at all. The Spike Lee rendition sticks with the original storyline, but swaps in Josh Brolin’s advertising executive for Oh Dae-su, and this new poster appropriately represents the 20 years he’s held in the prison, with each red etching representing a year. The 2013 “Oldboy” cast also includes Samuel L. Jackson, Elizabeth Olsen, and Sharlto Copley, and is due in theaters on October 11th, 2013. By Perri Nemiroff

From “The Occult” to “The Devil’s Rapture” and finally “Where the Devil Hides,” the title for the upcoming Jennifer Carpenter-starrer is finally locked and branded on its very first poster, which popped up in the halls of CinemaCon. It’s a rather bare design, but the simplicity makes the imagery even more unsettling. The film hones in on the small village of New Bethlehem, which is led by a strict contingent of Elders. When six girls are born to six different mothers on the very same day, the Elders view it as an evil omen. On the girls’ eighteenth birthday, one-by-one they begin to disappear and the townsfolk start to wonder,  [ Read More ]

CinemaCon 2013: Insidious 2 Teaser Poster

Insidious-Thumb

We’re kicking things off with a little James Wan. The sequel to his 2011 haunted house hit, “Insidious,” isn’t due out until September 13, 2013, but the film’s very first teaser poster is already peppering the halls of Caesars Palace. Oddly enough, the shot I got is of the new design in a light box display and that display caught the reflection of a poster for yet another Wan 2013 release, “The Conjuring.” But back to that “Insidious 2” poster – there clearly isn’t much to it, but for fans of the first, the font alone is enough to get you pumped for round two, which is said to continue  [ Read More ]

Horror Film Virginia Obscura Slashing Scares with Poster

The official first stills from the upcoming horror mystery thriller ‘Virginia Obscura’ have been reveled by its writer-director, Toby Osborne, and producers, Day of the Muerto. The film, which recently wrapped principal photography, is currently in post-production. ‘Virginia Obscura’ features such feature horror stars as Matt Mitler, Thomas Kovacs, Linnea Quigley, Jessica Cameron and Christopher Marrone, as well as new actors Jennie Brown and Ed Conrade. The movie, which was shot on location in new York, Los Angeles and Atlanta, is primarily set on a 100-year old farmhouse in Ontario, Canada, during the middle of winter. Scary-Movie-5

After a string of new wide releases hit it big recently, we could be in for a rather quiet weekend at the box office. The “Scary Movie” franchise is back for round five and even though the third and fourth installments both opened with intakes north of $40 million, “Scary Movie 5” will likely only manage to match “A Haunted House’s” $18 million. This weekend’s second wide release,“42,” is poised to find the middle ground between “Trouble with the Curve” and “Moneyball,” which would give it about $15 million to start. The rest of the weekend’s top ten belongs to the box office veterans. “Evil Dead” will likely face the  [ Read More ]
