Analeigh Tipton Adam Brody Damsels in Distress

While people, even in the same social circles, have different personalities and outlooks on life, everyone is quick to defend their viewpoints and ideas, even to their friends. This is one of the key topics in writer-director Whit Stillman’s new comedy ‘Damsels in Distress,’ which is now playing in select theaters. The lead female characters in the film are on a mission to change the ideals and actions on their college campus, particularly amongst their male counterparts, even if it means arguing with those around them. ‘Damsels in Distress’ follows a trio of girls-dynamic leader Violet (played by Greta Gerwig), opinionated Rose (portrayed by Megalyn Echikunwoke) and sexy Heather (played  [ Read More ]

The women-take-charge, narcissistic attitude has become increasingly prevalent in films, and writer-director Whit Stillman is the latest filmmaker to take part in the trend. His new comedy ‘Damsels in Distress,’ which is now playing in select theaters, isn’t afraid to present its female leads as smarter than their male counter-parts. The women are also classier than the men, in a school where male barbarism is still in effect, decades after coeducation was implemented on American college campuses. ‘Damsels in Distress’ follows a trio of girls-dynamic leader Violet (played by Greta Gerwig), principled Rose (portrayed by Megalyn Echikunwoke) and sexy Heather (played by Carrie MacLemore)-as they set out to revolutionize life  [ Read More ]

College is finally the time when people can voice their opinions and set out to accomplish whatever they put their minds to. This certainly rings true in writer-director Whit Stillman’s new comedy, ‘Damsels in Distress,’ in which females are finally taking control of college life, and are portrayed to be smarter than their male counterparts. The female characters in the film aren’t afraid to voice their thoughts and opinions, no matter how different they are than their friends’ and classmates’ ideas. ‘Damsels in Distress’ follows a trio of beautiful girls-dynamic leader Violet (played by Greta Gerwig), principled Rose (portrayed by Megalyn Echikunwoke) and sexy Heather (played by Carrie Maclemore)-who try  [ Read More ]

Morgan Spurlock

Since bursting onto the scene (and out of his jeans) with the self-torturing “Super Size Me,” for which he ate nothing but McDonalds for an entire month, documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock has shown a knack for selecting zeitgeist-friendly subjects for his nonfiction explorations. In his latest movie, “Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope,” he turns his attention to the annual San Diego-set celebration of comic book culture that has grown into a full-fledged pit-stop/forced blind date for Hollywood studios and the eager genre film fans they wish to court. ShockYa had a chance to speak to Spurlock one-on-one recently, about comic books, the direction of Comic-Con, his next project, and the  [ Read More ]

Carrie MacLemore Talks Damsels in Distress

A true Southern belle, Carrie MacLemore was born in Mississippi and raised in Alabama, but now resides mostly in New York, where she twice moved to try her hand at acting. In charming, demure tones, she admits she escaped her homeland without an affinity for country music or NASCAR (“Which means I didn’t quite feel like I fit in when I was little”), and says she feels most Southern when she’s out of the South, and her accent helps render her a delightful curio. With but a few television credits to her name, MacLemore was hand-picked by director Whit Stillman for her film debut in his fourth feature film, “Damsels in Distress.” In  [ Read More ]

Adam Brody Damsels in Distress

Millions of fans came of age vicariously through Adam Brody on the small screen via his roles ”Gilmore Girls” and especially ”The O.C.,” where he displayed a penchant for neurosis-infused quips. But the 32-year-old actor has also crafted a surprisingly diverse and hip, quirky filmography, which he adds to with writer-director Whit Stillman’s latest movie, “Damsels in Distress.” In the very atypical college comedy, Brody, opposite Greta Gerwig and Analeigh Tipton, co-stars as Charlie Walker, a suave young businessman who might well be exercising a loose relationship with veracity in attempting to create some romantic shortcuts. ShockYa recently had a chance to sit down and talk with Brody one-on-one, about both Stillman’s peculiar style and tone, as  [ Read More ]

Shanley Caswell Talks Detention

ShanleyCaswell_302

The film “Detention” is being billed as a “teen comedy-horror film” and even though that’s a lot to take in, “Detention” star Shanley Caswell said there’s even more than that. “It’s a multigenre film,” she said. “Sci-fi, time travel, body swapping, with comedy mixed in.” Caswell plays Riley Jones, a social outcast who eventually becomes one of the heroes of the film. “She’s not really sure of herself in the beginning, but later on in the film, we see her step up, saving the world,” said Caswell. Getting in character wasn’t hard for Caswell since Riley’s insecurity is something everyone has dealt with. “Everyone has gone through the stage of  [ Read More ]

At first glance, the Booth Brothers look like they would be the life of the party. And in many cases, they are. The rock star looking duo has made an impression during the 6th Annual Gasparilla International Film Festival, currently running on all-cylinders in Tampa, Florida. Christopher Saint Booth and Philip Adrian Booth are simply documentary filmmakers…who just happen to specialize in chronicling stories of the supernatural by entering some of the most haunted, and disturbing places on Earth. They’re not your typical sell-out ghost hunters though, and essentially, they’re just curious about that stage of life (my opinion). In fact, their only true goal is to present the facts  [ Read More ]

Elizabeth Olsen

She’s only 23 years old, but Elizabeth Olsen’s big screen one-two punch is a no-foolin’ trumpet blast heralding the arrival of a major new movie talent. If, bafflingly and sadly, her debut “Martha Marcy May Marlene” failed to crack $3 million at the domestic box office, won over plenty of critics; she was co-honored, along with her collaborators, with the New Generation Award by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, among several other prizes. Her new film, “Silent House,” not just confirms Olsen’s talents, but immediately showcases her ability to anchor a movie — quite literally. She’s in every frame of co-directors Chris Kentis and Laura Lau’s psychological thriller, which  [ Read More ]

After a lauded world premiere at Toronto International Film Festival, writer-director, and star, Ryan O’Nan has seemingly announced his presence on his own terms. His “passion” project, Brooklyn Brothers Beat the Best, is screening this weekend at the 6th Annual Gasparilla International Film Festival, currently underway in Tampa, Florida. The talented performer is pulling double-duty at the fest, for he’s not only making the rounds promoting the film and partaking in Q&A sessions, he’s also showcasing his musical attributes, as seen in the film, for the festival patrons on an outdoor stage as well. O’Nan met up with yours truly at the historic Tampa Theatre and the guy allowed us  [ Read More ]
