James White Movie Review

Title: James White Director: Josh Mond Starring: Christopher Abbott, Cynthia Nixon, Scott Mescudi, Mackenzie Leigh, David Call, Ron Livingston Growing up is not easy, and that makes a character with a stunted sense of maturity perfect for the focus of a film. Usually, this character makes an appearance in comedies, with an exaggerated childishness prohibiting his or her development used to humorous effect. Portraying a similar situation in a drama can be just as compelling if not even more so, but it is underlined with a certain sadness. James White is the story of a man who has avoided becoming an independent adult due to his circumstances and a lack  [ Read More ]

Title: Sleeping with Other People Director: Leslye Headland Starring: Jason Sudeikis, Alison Brie, Adam Scott, Amanda Peet, Jason Mantzoukas, Andrea Savage, Natasha Lyonne Can men and women ever be just friends? Films like No Strings Attached and Friends with Benefits have suggested that if sex enters the equation, all bets are off, since romance and love are inevitable consequences of a physical relationship. In Sleeping with Other People, two people meet one night in college and lose their virginities to each other, and then are not reunited for twelve years. Realizing just how much sex has ruined every relationship either of them has ever had, they decide to avoid any  [ Read More ]

Slow West Movie Review

Title: Slow West Director: John Maclean Starring: Kodi Smit-McPhee, Michael Fassbender, Ben Mendelsohn, Caren Pistorius, Rory McCann The Western is an interesting genre, one that historically did not belong entirely to the United States. Stories were usually set there in the American West but often made by non-American filmmakers such as Sergio Leone. This year’s Sundance World Cinema Dramatic Competition brings a film coproduced by the United Kingdom and New Zealand that sets itself in the West after the Civil War, following a young Scottish boy in search of his true love, who has come to America. This Western is in many ways traditional, full of slow developments and less  [ Read More ]

Nasty Baby Movie Review

Title: Nasty Baby Director: Sebastian Silva Starring: Sebastian Silva, Kristen Wiig, Tunde Adebimpe, Alia Shawkat, Mark Margolis, Reg E. Cathey A film with a title like Nasty Baby can go in a lot of different directions, and most of them are not promising or ideal. Sebastian Silva, who directed one of Sundance’s weirdest entries from 2013, Crystal Fairy, casts himself in a story that chooses to define its title in two ways. One involves a gay man whose partner may be a better match than him to be a sperm donor to help his straight female friend have a baby. The other, which is far more bizarre, is the name  [ Read More ]

Western Movie Review

Posted by abe On January - 28 - 2015 0 Comment

Title: Western Directors: Bill Ross and Turner Ross This film’s title is misleading in a few ways. It is not a Western with cowboys riding through the Old West trying to reclaim land or love, as another Sundance selection, Slow West, is. Nor is it set in any true West Coast state. Instead, this documentary is all about Texas and the culture of one border town, Eagle Pass, which shares a close history and relationship with its Mexican sister city, Piedras Negras. The title refers to the Western sensibility present in Texas that defines it as a distinctly American place with a complicated connection to somewhere close by with a  [ Read More ]
