Which 2012 summer blockbusters will join the exclusive domestic club… It’s that time of year where yours truly will alienate himself from his fellow writers once again. Actually, they’ll probably just call me an arrogant prick. Why? Well, most of them are authoring their 2012 summer movie preview, which is a common practice or tradition (that I used to partake in) in the film journalism realm around this time of year. That is essentially worthless. Aside from alerting moviegoers to when a flick opens; who will appear in it; and what it’s about, the rest of these columns are bloated with pure redundant speculation. Newsflash folks, 99.9% of the time,  [ Read More ]

With the upcoming release of their debut album, “I Waited For You”, Valora will redefine the male ego. The alternative rock genre is in dire need of this shake-up. The music industry doesn’t yearn for a band that can deliver a Daughtry hit, followed by a Nickelback hit, a Foo Fighters’ hit and topped off with the ultimate mimic, a Nirvana hit. The industry needs originality and what better way to spice up the bland rock stew than with some female flavoring? Shockya readers, say hello to the ultimate alternative ingredient, Syd Duran. Don’t worry, she is not a duplicate of Paramore’s Hayley Williams. Duran will not simply dismiss the  [ Read More ]

Happy Birthday Mary Blair From Google Doodle

Posted by Karen Benardello On October - 21 - 2011 0 Comment

To celebrate what would be the 100th birthday of Mary Blair, Google has replaced its official logo on its homepage today with a colorful doodle inspired by the late Disney artist. The doodle, titled “Mary Blair’s 100th Birthday,” features a caricature of the artist, which replaces the second G in the search engine’s logo. The remaining letters spelling Google are drawn in different colors and designs, as made famous by the artist. Blair contributed artwork to such popular 1950s Disney films as ‘Alice in Wonderland,’ ‘Cinderella’ and ‘Peter Pan.’ She left Disney animation in the mid-50s, but was later hired to work on such theme-park attractions as ‘It’s a Small  [ Read More ]

Usually, the autumn days have us thickening our clothing layers with a dismal expression on our faces, but this fall we think our frowns will be permanently flipped around. We credit our surge of optimism to Grace Potter and The Nocturnals. We got to check out the genre-fusing band on Saturday night, September 24th, at Rumsey Playfield Central Park and the night was magical. That description might sound a bit corny, but Grace Potter and The Nocturnals remind us just why we fell for music in the first place. We have had the band’s 2010 self-titled album on constant replay for the past year, but seeing them perform the tracks  [ Read More ]

2011 Summer Movie Season: Projected $300 million club

Posted by Joe Belcastro On May - 3 - 2011 2 Comments

With the 2011 summer movie season upon us, an abundance of previews and predictions are starting to hit outlets all over the country. Now with all due respect to the authors who write these preview pieces; the truth is, none of us can accurately predict how entertaining a big-budgeted blockbuster is going to be. And that works both ways; for even the ones that we think may bomb, can actually turn into a nice surprise. So in the effort to offer an alternate preview – and to kind of contradict myself – here’s a look at the 2011 summer flicks that yours truly believes will venture into the coveted $300  [ Read More ]

Bryan Singer’s film “Jack the Giant Killer” has found its princess. According to Deadline, Eleanor Tomlinson has been cast as Isabella, a princess that, after running away from home, gets captured by giants. The casting decision comes from a long search Singer undertook to find the right actress to play Isabella. Tomlinson has been an actress since she was 12 years old, having acted in “Angus, Thongs, and Perfect Snogging,” “The Illusionist”, and most recently, a small role in Disney’s “Alice in Wonderland”. However, this role, according to Deadline, will be her biggest role yet. The film already has big names such as Nicholas Hoult, Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci, Bill Nighy  [ Read More ]

Clash Of The Titans Conquers The Box Office

Posted by Perri Nemiroff On April - 4 - 2010 0 Comment

Perseus didn’t only overpower the evils unleashed by Hades this weekend, he conquered the entire country. Clash of the Titans took in a massive $61.4 million making in the top grossing Easter release of all time. The previous record holder didn’t even stand a chance. Back in 2006, Scary Movie 4 earned $40.2 million. But Clash‘s monstrous total wasn’t enough to take down Fast and Furious‘ $70.95 million haul, leaving it as the second biggest April earner. I didn’t love Clash of the Titans, but did enjoy it. While I’d recommend the film to anyone looking for a little action, its enormous 3D earning is extremely unnerving. Of its $61.4  [ Read More ]
