Posted by Perri Nemiroff On August - 29 - 2010 0 Comment

Julia Roberts, Scott Pilgrim and a horde of man-eating piranha may have been no match for Sly and the gang, but the devil is a different story. Not only did The Last Exorcism snag the top spot from the The Expendables but this week’s other newcomer Takers, too, but not by much. Eli Roth and Lionsgate are likely very pleased with The Last Exorcism’s $21.3 million opening especially considering the film only took $1.8 million to make. And the same goes for the folks over at Screen Gems. After being bumped from its original May release date, who would have thought Takers would help end the summer with a bang  [ Read More ]

The thought of James Cameron spending $300 million on Avatar is outrageous, but for some reason, M. Night Shyamalan getting $280 million -$130 million for marketing, $150 million for production – for The Last Airbender seems downright ridiculous. Cameron spends big, but delivers big; with Shyamalan, that’s not always the case, especially recently. Okay, despite getting trounced by the critics The Happening did manage to take in $163.4 million worldwide, but $280 million still seems like too much to gamble on a filmmaker that can’t guarantee quality. Plus, the guy is in a total slump. Ever since Signs, he’s fallen further and further. The Village isn’t terrible, but far from  [ Read More ]

Ever since Avatar smashed every box office record in history, it’s been understood that a sequel will follow. But beyond that, nobody really knows anything about Avatar 2 at all, even the first film’s producer, Jon Landau. While talking to ComingSoon at a sneak peek of Avatar on Blu-ray, Landau revealed that he’s feeling some sequel stress. “Look, I think one of the things that we have been successful at is that the most pressure we feel is our own pressure,” he said. “We’ve always said that if the public wanted a sequel that we would do a sequel.” He added, “We’re only going to do it when we have  [ Read More ]

Mel Gibsons Return to Acting Did Not Fare Well

Posted by Karen Benardello On February - 2 - 2010 0 Comment

America usually embraces and loves come-backs from former Hollywood favorites, such as Mickey Rourke in his Golden Globe-winning turn last year in ‘The Wrestler.’ But audiences weren’t so quick to overlook Mel Gibson’s shortcomings, as the director and screenwriter’s first movie as an actor in eight years, the crime thriller ‘Edge of Darkness,’ grossed only $17.1 million during its opening weekend. The film, which is the first time Gibson graced the screen since his drunk driving arrest and alleged anti-Semitic rant in 2006, paled in comparison to Liam Neeson’s similarly themed hit ‘Taken.’ That movie made $24.7 million during its opening weekend last year, even though it lost the majority  [ Read More ]
