BURBANK, Calif. (April 26, 2011) — Production has started on “The Avengers” today, and in honor of the event, the first set photo has been released! You can see it for yourself below the story, but the picture is of the Avengers emblem with canvas chairs labeled “Thor”, “Iron Man”, “Captain America”, and “Hulk”. Overall, it’s a very tantalizing picture, even though we basically see nothing in the way of characters. A few days ago, I speculated that the “Avengers” role a lot of Hollywood starlets were vying for would be for the Wasp. Well, enough speculation, as we now have some definite answers! According to Newsarama via Variety, Colbie Smulders has been cast as Agent Maria Hill in “The Avengers”.  A bit of backstory on the character: Maria Hill, according to Newsarama, was created by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist David Finch. The little Marvel movie that could seems to be slowly gathering more steam. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “V” actress Morena Baccarin is among several actresses shortlisted to audition for the “Avengers” movie. Other actresses include Jessica Lucas, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Cobie Smulders. The part Marvel is trying to fill is the role of a key member in Nick Fury’s Avengers team. It is speculated that the role is that of The Wasp/Janet van Dyne, but Marvel declined to comment to The Hollywood Reporter. Marvel Entertainment has released a few updates on upcoming movie adaptations of their properties, including the highly-anticipated “Avengers” film. “Iron Man 2″ is already filming and still on-schedule for release May 7th, 2010, and release, and the Kenneth Branagh-directed “Thor” still hasn’t made any casting decisions, is in pre-production, and scheduled to being filming in the beginning of 2010. “Thor” is aiming for a May 20th, 2011 release. “The First Avenger: Captain America”, directed by Joe Johnston, is scheduled to start filming in the summer of 2010 and has a tentative July 22nd, 2011 release date. A slew of rumors regarding casting for the upcoming “Thor” movie for Marvel, which is being directed by Kenneth Branagh, have hit the internet, according to Nikki Finke at Deadline Hollywood. Rumors point towards the studio pushing to cast Josh Hartnett in one of several roles, including nemesis and Asguardian trickster god Loki.
