Coriolanus Movie Review

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

Title: Coriolanus Directed By: Ralph Fiennes Starring: Ralph Fiennes, Vanessa Redgrave, Brian Cox, Gerard Butler, James Nesbitt, Paul Jesson, Jessica Chastain, Lubna Azabal, Ashraf Barhom Back in high school, I always knew I should appreciate Shakespeare, but getting through his work was so tedious, it often took away from the narrative. Then, once I finally understood the text and perhaps should have gone back for a second go-around to appreciate it as a story, it was onto the next book of the semester, forever branding his work a mere school assignment rather than something that was meant to be enjoyed. Thanks to Ralph Fiennes, if Coriolanus ever comes up in…

DVD Review: Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Catdog, Seven Chances, Futurama, Straw Dogs and Act of Vengeance

Friday, December 23rd, 2011

“Rise of the Planet of the Apes” was a $480 million worldwide hit, but buzz-averse distributor 20th Century Fox rolled out theĀ movie in early August with a blitz of TV advertising but otherwise so little fanfare (as per their usual operating procedure, screenings for critics were “opt-in,” and additionally hush-hush) that a lot of more savvy filmgoers who perhaps look to advance reviews and feature coverage peeks as signs of studio confidence in the marketplace thought the movie was a brainless dud. Far from it, actually. Director Rupert Wyatt’s reboot of Tim Burton’s reboot of Fox’s second most well known franchise property (not counting “Star Wars,” which they don’t own)…

Rise of the Planet of the Apes Movie Review

Friday, August 5th, 2011

Title: Rise of the Planet of the Apes Directed By: Rupert Wyatt Starring: Andy Serkis, James Franco, Freida Pinto, John Lithgow, Brian Cox, Tom Felton, David Oyelowo, Tyler Labine, Jamie Harris This summer, CGI’s been presented mainly as a gimmick – in good ways, like in Thor, in okay ways, like in Cowboys & Aliens and in nauseating ways, like in Transformers Dark of the Moon. While Rise of the Planet of the Apes is packed with digitally created apes, they are in no way comparable to the CGI planets, aliens and robots we’ve seen in the past few month; they’re as real as they can be without actually being…

Awesome Rise of the Planet of the Apes WETA Motion Capture Featurette

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011

I’ve seen this film and it’s fantastic. As a huge fan of all (even somewhat of the Tim Burton version) “Planet of the Apes” movies, I really dug this new one. It holds true to the mythology and imagination created by these films, while at the same time, pay homage to its source. One of the reasons why this new movie is so effective is the amazing special effects by WETA, who also did the motion capture work of “The Lord of the Rings”, Peter Jackson’s “King Kong” and “Avatar”. All of this capped off by the spectacular and extremely heartfelt performance by Andy Serkis, who play Gollum and King…

New Music Video Shows Ironclad's Romantic Side

Monday, July 11th, 2011

After the recently released montage of bloody battle scenes, a non-brutal piece of promo material for the new release Ironclad comes as a bit of a surprise. Okay, the Aika music video for “Dancing Arrows” isn’t devoid of violence, but Kate Mara and the film’s romantic side certainly take center stage here. Ironclad focuses on the aftermath of the signing of the Magna Carta in 1215. After being forced to sign, King John (Paul Giamatti) is hell bent on getting revenge on those responsible and taking control of the nation. Standing in his way is Templar Knight, Thomas Marshall (James Purefoy), and a small band of warriors determined to defend…

Ironclad Spills Blood And Guts On YouTube

Wednesday, June 29th, 2011

How about a little blood and guts before bed? A montage of gruesome battle scenes from the upcoming film Ironclad popped up on YouTube and it’s brimming with grisly sword battles, dismembered limbs and impalements all drenched in the brightest red blood. When you’re finished soaking up this gory goodness, be sure to check out the film’s trailer as it shows that Ironclad is much more than a series of wicked fight scenes. The year is 1215 and King John (Paul Giamatti) is furious for having been forced to sign the Magna Carta. To retaliate, he assembles an army and moves to take London. But first, he must conquer Rochester…

New The Rise of The Planet of The Apes Theatrical Trailer Hits the Web

Saturday, June 4th, 2011

This looks amazing! Back in April, 20th Century FOX released the first trailer to the re-boot/prequel to the sci-fi classic franchise, “The Planet of The Apes”, “The Rise of The Planet of The Apes” (see how it’s different?), to excited fan boys across the Internet. Now the new trailer, oh my, does it get me excited for this movie. We get a better sense of the movie’s plot and story and overall tone, but more importantly, we get a better sense of the apes. They looks simply amazing! The scary thing about their looks is that they looks so real and lifelike. Good job to the people at Weta, who…

Red Movie Review

Thursday, October 14th, 2010

Title: Red Directed By: Robert Schwentke Starring: Bruce Willis, Mary-Louise Parker, Karl Urban, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Brian Cox, Richard Dreyfuss, Helen Mirren Is it possible for a film starring Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich and Helen Mirren to be bad? Maybe, but if you put handguns, machine guns and grenade launchers in theirs hands and give them some snappy dialogue to work with, you’re basically home free. What happens when a highly skilled CIA agent retires? He’s labeled RED, short for Retired and Extremely Dangerous and there’s really no better way to describe retiree Frank Moses (Willis). He’s doing okay in a cozy suburban town, decorating his house…
