Red Band Trailer For 21 Jump Street Released

Friday, November 4th, 2011

After months of speculation and wondering, the red band trailer for “21 Jump Street” has finally been released! The trailer was put on the film’s official Facebookpage, and, having seen at least one episode of the original “21 Jump Street,” I think it’s fair to say that there’s a very big difference in tone from the show, which made Johnny Depp a household name. The film stars Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill as doofus cops who look young enough to pass for high schoolers, so they’re enrolled in an revived undercover cop unit: “In the action-comedy 21 Jump Street, Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) are more than ready…

X-Men: First Class

DVD Review, Glee Season 2, X-Men First Class, Blood Simple and Just Peck

Thursday, September 15th, 2011

Over a decade ago, Bryan Singer’s adaptation of the “X-Men” comic book franchise gave the modern superhero genre a kick in the pants, seeding action thrills with deeper ethical conflicts, and laying the groundwork for both the grander commercial success (think “Spider-Man”) and some of the more artistic-minded noodling of a wide variety of genre followers (see also: Ang Lee’s “Hulk”). A prequel to the original trilogy, director Matthew Vaughn’s ”X-Men: First Class” is a slick piece of pop entertainment marked by smarter than average characterizations and some solid performances, and it confirms that mainstream Hollywood studio films can indeed – with some effort, and the oversight of a savvy producer – still…

Tanner Hall Movie Review

Friday, September 9th, 2011

Title: Tanner Hall Directed By: Francesca Gregorini and Tatiana von Furstenberg Starring: Rooney Mara, Georgia King, Brie Larson, Amy Ferguson, Tom Everett Scott, Chris Kattan, Shawn Pyfrom, Ryan Schira, Amy Sedaris Sure, it’s nice for a film to have a solid script paired with appropriate visuals, but sometimes, movies can get away with having the former, but not the latter. The bigger problem comes when you’re trying to achieve the reverse and mask weak writing with a pretty picture. In fact, in most instances, it’s impossible and Tanner Hall is certainly an example of one of those cases. It’s another year at Tanner Hall boarding school. Fernanda, Kate and Lucasta…

Tanner Hall

Tanner Hall Movie Review

Monday, September 5th, 2011

Title: Tanner Hall Directed By: Francesca Gregorini, Tatiana von Furstenberg Written By: Francesca Gregorini, Tatiana von Fustenberg Cast: Rooney Mara, Georgia King, Brie Larson, Amy Ferguson, Tom Everett Scott, Chris Kattan Screened at: Dolby88, NYC, 8/23/11 Opens: September 9, 2011 A movie about an all-girls’ secondary-level boarding school is probably not going to deal how the students discuss the situation in Libya. “Tanner Hall” is no exception to the usual rule that such a genre will emphasize sex, flirtations, troublemaking, all the subjects that parents don’t want to deal with, which is why they send their teens to such a place. These gals are stereotypical, which is to say that…

Scott Pilgrim vs the World Poster

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World Movie Review

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

Title: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World Directed By: Edgar Wright Starring: Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Jason Schwartzman, Kieran Culkin, Alison Pill, Mark Webber, Johnny Simmons, Ellen Wong, Anna Kendrick, Aubrey Plaza, Satya Bhabha, Chris Evans, Brie Larson, Mae Whitman, Brandon Routh, Keita Saito, Shota Saito On the weekend that every cinematic action hero hits the big screen in just one film, The Expendables, how can moviegoers be expected to accept Michael Cera as just as much of a hero? Thanks to the ingenious filmmaking techniques of Edgar Wright, some may find that Cera is more of a leading man than any of those muscled up stars. Cera isn’t given…
