Many improvements went into the positive reception that “Captain America: The First Avenger” enjoyed this summer – a 79% fresh-certified rating on Rotten Tomatoes, compared to the risible 11% rating that its predecessor, from 1992, pulled – including some fairly persuasive body-mapping technology on the pre-transformation character of Steve Rogers, played by Chris Evans. But surely a big portion of credit also rests with the characterization of Red Skull (Hugo Weaving), Captain America’s frightening and forthrightly named nemesis. That challenge – of crafting a practical makeup fix that was scary but, more importantly, visually iconic – fell upon prosthetics makeup designer David White. ShockYa recently had a chance to submit…

The revenge thriller “Hanna” – which plays as sort of like a cross between “The Professional” and “Run Lola Run,” with a pinch of “The Bourne Identity” — courses with an unflagging, forward-leaning vigor. It’s a smart, stylish, interesting and fun piece of pop entertainment, powered by strong performances and all wrapped up in an offbeat but engaging fairytale motif that gives the material a little extra zesty kick. Opening in the snowy wilds of Finland, the story centers on 16-year-old Hanna Heller (Saoirse Ronan), who has the intelligence, strength, stamina and lethal combat skill set of a soldier the opposite gender and twice her age, all thanks to her father Erik…

Title: Captain America: The First Avenger Directed By: Joe Johnston Starring: Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, Tommy Lee Jones, Hugo Weaving, Dominic Cooper, Stanley Tucci, Toby Jones, Neal McDonough So far, so good for The Avengers this summer. Thor’s a pretty cool guy and now it’s Captain America to show off what he’s got. Sure, he comes with the superhero standards – buff body, noble intentions and a sleek costume – but other than that, he’s nothing more than a poster boy for Marvel movies. Steve Rogers makes for a better propaganda symbol than superhero. Chris Evans is Steve Rogers, a Brooklyn native desperate to serve his country. Sadly,…

Apologies for the late arrival of your Movie News Cheat Sheet, but as I arrived back in New York late last night, I figured it might be smart (and ultimately more legible) to get some rest and digest all of the info that came out of San Diego Comic Con as this week, the Cheat Sheet is here to celebrate just that, SDCC 2011. With a massive amount of some of the hottest Hollywood has to offer flying in for the event, the convention was absolutely brimming with movie news. We’ve got everything from new trailers and posters, to updates on new productions like the handful Robert Rodriguez has planned…

It all ends here? Maybe not. After a $169 million start, there’s a good chance Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 could hang on to that #1 spot. Even if Harry falls 60%, it’ll still come in with another $67 million, an amount newcomer Captain America: The First Avenger might have a tough time matching as so far this summer, the highest opening superhero film is Thor and it only posted a $65.7 million at the end of week one. There’s no reason to think Captain America will make any less, but Potter certainly has a very good shot at trumping whatever The First Avenger does pull in….

Title: Captain America: The First Avenger Directed By: Joe Johnston Written By: Christopher Markus, Stephen McFeely Cast: Chris Evans, Tommy Lee Jones, Hayley Atwell, Hugo Weaving, Sebastian Stan, Toby Jones Screened at: E-Walk, NYC, 7/19/11 Opens: July 22, 2011 Thank goodness for superheroes. How would we ever defeat the Nazis without them? The easiest way to have done this rather than allowing the American phase of World War II to drag on for 3-1/2 years would have been to enlist Captain Marvel. After all, Captain Marvel and his doppelganger Billy Batson were created in 1939 and could have gone to war just when Poland was invaded. Just a quick Shazam…
