I think the best way to start this is to come from the view point of art, history, cinema and storytelling as a way to tackle the analysis of FOX News’ point of view of “The Muppets”. The idea of brainwashing children into thinking capitalism and success are bad things. Yes, from the point of view of FOX News is that money is good and people and government are bad. An “attack” from the liberal biases of Hollywood would make sense then, and after all FOX’s way of running this country is the right way. I really don’t take anything seriously on FOX News anyway. But I found the point…

Too many romantic comedies witlessly hone in on the differences between men and women to create a heightened-stakes backdrop in which every interaction with the opposite sex is imbued with some sort of grand, gender-statement significance, which is of course then supposed to be neatly resolved and tidily put away by the time a paired-off happy ending rolls around. Co-written by Annie Mumolo and “Saturday Night Live”‘s Kristen Wiig, “Bridesmaids” instead focuses a considerable amount of its energy on female friendships, yes, but also the things women want in relationships — love, security, availability — that are the same as men. The result is the best female-fronted Hollywood comedy in years, and a…

Title: Amigo Directed By: John Sayles Written By: John Sayles Cast: Garret Dillahunt, Joel Torres, Yul Vazquez, Chris Cooper, D.J. Qualls, Jemi Paretas Screened at: Review 1, NYC, 8/8/11 Opens: August 19, 2011 The press notes for “Amigo” state that the film is “a page torn from the untold history of the Philippines.” Hey, where does one find a page to tear if the history is untold? In fact, “untold” is hardly the case. Even in high school, textbooks deal with “The Aguinaldo Insurrection” as a result of America’s first attempt at a world-wide empire, an imperialistic thrust that launched a vigorous opposition from the likes of Mark Twain and…

Title: The Company Men Writer-director: John Wells Starring: Ben Affleck, Tommy Lee Jones, Chris Cooper, Craig T. Nelson, Rosemarie DeWitt, Kevin Costner, Maria Bello, Eammon Walker ‘The Company Men’ sounds like a cut-rate, straight-to-video mobster movie starring Michael Madsen, but it’s actually (at least in this incarnation) a tale of white collar woe — an ensemble drama, with a heavy-hitter cast, from ‘ER’ creator John Wells that made its play for sociocultural relevance last December, and got lost in the holiday movie shuffle, grossing a meager $4.4 million after its platform release by the Weinstein Company sputtered and failed. So what gives? Is this downsized drama of the shrinking American…

They’re back! Oh, how I have fond memories of going to the theater with my parents to see a new muppets movie when I was a boy. AICN.com revealed the new teaser poster hitting theaters this weekend. From the looks of things it looks like the gang is back! The new Muppets film will be the first theatrical release since 1999s “Muppets From Space”. This franchise used to have staying power since the release fo the first Muppets movie in 1979 with “The Muppet Movie”. This new film was penned by “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” scribe and star Jason Segel and co-written by “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” director Nicholas Stoller. Considering it…

Title: The Company Men Directed By: John Wells Starring: Ben Affleck, Tommy Lee Jones, Chris Cooper, Maria Bello, Rosemarie DeWitt, Kevin Costner, Craig T. Nelson, Eamonn Walker Whether it’s happened to you or someone you know, job loss is a personal matter for the large majority and that makes it a testy topic to manage in a film. If it isn’t represented accurately it could be insulting, then again if it’s dealt with too precisely, it could be too much for some to handle, however, The Company Men approaches the issue quite tactfully. Not only does it deliver a respectable presentation of the hardship, but still manages to maintain a…
