Inception Snags The Top Spot At The Box Office For The Third Straight Week

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

At least one film met my expectations this week. I predicted both Inception and Salt would maintain their positions on the chart forcing Dinner for Schmucks to settle for #3, but it looks like just one of the two was able to hold on. Taking the top spot for the third week in a row is Inception with $27.5 million, bringing its grand total to $193.3 million. Dinner for Schmucks came in at #2 with a gross of $23.5 million, which just missed out on being Steve Carell’s highest debut of the year (not including Despicable Me), falling short of Date Night’s $25.2 million opening. Salt took a 45.9% hit,…

Shrek Doesn't Need A Pair Of Manolo Blahniks To Win Big At The Box Office

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

I know New York City is enjoying the fantastic weather this holiday, but is the same true for the entire country? Apparently few have opted to spend some of their extended weekend in the theater because, according to Box Office Mojo, business is down big time. This Memorial Day weekend is on its way to becoming one of the lowest grossing in nine years. Newcomer Sex and the City 2 and Prince of Persia couldn’t outperform last week’s big release, Shrek Forever After. The franchise’s fourth film remains #1 for a second week, dropping 38.8%, and earning another $43 million bringing the grand total to $133 million. Lagging far behind…

Robin Hood Is No Match For Iron Man At The Box Office

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

Bows and arrows are clearly no match for Tony Stark’s Iron Man suit. The early numbers are in and Iron Man 2 held up quite well taking in an impressive $53 million in its second week. Robin Hood’s $37.1 million doesn’t sound all that bad, but can be seen as a massive failure considering the Ridley Scott/Russell Crowe epic cost a whopping $200 million to make. The brutal big boys were followed by the Amanda Seyfried romancer Letters to Juliet. That one opened up with $13.7 million while Queen Latifah’s comedy, Just Right, followed with $8.5. How to Train Your Dragon enjoyed yet another week in the top five pulling…

How To Train Your Dragon Edges Out Kick-Ass At The Box Office

Sunday, April 18th, 2010

Kick-Ass may have kicked ass with the critics, but the same isn’t true for the public. After a massive marketing effort, the superhero flick only took in $19.7 million leaving it way short of Lionsgate’s rumored $30 million goal. Hopefully the film will have some legs and win as big as hoped as time goes on, but for now, Matthew Vaughn and crew will have to settle for second best. How to Train Your Dragon reclaimed the top spot just edging out Kick-Ass with $20 million, boosting its grand total to $159 million. Finishing the weekend in third is Tina Fey and Steve Carell’s Date Night, which held up quite well…
