Title: The Words Director: Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal Cast: Dennis Quaid, Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana, Jeremy Irons and Olivia Wilde Writing is a fundamental practice in communication. To make yourself understood through written words is probably the most engaging and intimate feeling you can have with someone without actually meeting them. Through your words is how we know you. So in Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal’s film, “The Words,” examines the truth behind words but only does it in a piecemeal, surface level and cinematically lazy way, that I question why couldn’t these words be more clear. After all, aspiring for mediocrity is a fool’s errand. “The Words” follows…

Title: Beneath the Darkness Director: Martin Guigui (‘Raging Bull II’) Starring: Dennis Quaid, Aimee Teegarden (TV’s ‘Friday Night Lights’) and Tony Oller (TV’s ‘Gigantic’) The appeal of living in small American towns is that everyone knows their neighbors, and they’re a safe environment for children to grow up in. But when a seemingly respectable pillar of the community is actually full of rage, and is willing to unleash fear on anyone who threatens to expose his secrets, the psychological terror is enough to frighten anyone. That’s certainly the case in the new horror-thriller ‘Beneath the Darkness,’ a chilling character-driven film which effectively relies on its characters’ motives and reactions, instead…

Title: Beneath The Darkness Image Entertainment Director: Martin Guigui Screenwriter: Bruce Wilkinson Cast: Dennis Quaid, Tony Oller, Aimee Teegarden, Stephen Lunsford, Devon Werkheiser, Brett Cullen Screened at: Review 1, NYC, 12/28/22 Opens: January 6, 2012 Countless interviews with major actors make us conclude that most would like to play villains, and why not? The bad guys get all the good lines while the heroes are so goody-two-shoes that their personalities can seem less believable that those of the rotters. Albert Brooks (“I’ll have a mushroom omelette, very ltitle butter”) got his chance in the fast-paced film “Drive,” succeeding beyond expectations, winning guild awards from New York to L.A. Now Dennis…

Title: Footloose Directed By: Craig Brewer Written By: Dean Pitchford, Craig Brewer Cast: Kenny Wormald, Julianne Hough, Dennis Quaid, Andie MacDowell Screened at: AMC Lincoln Square, NYC, 10/10/11 Opens: October 14, 2011 Is there anything that Kenny Wormald can’t do? He looks great, he can dance, he can do gymnastics, he can speak eloquently. He might even become this generation’s James Dean. We’d want to see him again in a movie that’s more serious than the enjoyable albeit trivial “Footloose,” a remake of Herbert Ross’s 1984 film that gave a great push to Kevin Bacon’s career. There’s every reason to remake the film for the current generation of teens and…

Title: Footloose (2011) Directed by: Craig Brewer (‘Hustle & Flow,’ ‘Black Snake Moan’) Starring: Kenny Wormald ‘(‘Center Stage: Turn It Up’), Julianne Hough (‘Burlesque,’ TV’s ‘Dancing With the Stars’) and Dennis Quaid Some films so perfectly capture the voice of a generation that even the mention of remaking it brings criticisms by loyal fans. ‘Footloose,’ which helped launch Kevin Bacon’s career when it was released in 1984, is one such movie. Teens were able to relate to Bacon’s rebellious character, Ren MacCormack, who tirelessly questioned the authority of the adults running his town. The new ‘Footloose’ remake, which was directed and co-written by Craig Brewer and is being released by…

Science-fiction is often so terribly difficult to get right on screen because its makers get bogged down in minutiae, trying to craft expansive, futuristic and/or alien worlds, or over-explain the processes that differentiate and separate their plane of reality from that of the present day. “Source Code “, thankfully, is not one of those movies. It grooves, it pulses, it entertains — deftly balancing smarts with a streamlined aim to please. The sophomore effort of director Duncan Jones ( “Moon “), the high-concept techno-thriller is kind of amusingly impatient with some of the nitty-gritty specifics of its own conceit (“Every second explaining things puts more lives at risk!” one character…
